The Coogee methanol plant in Laverton Victoria supplies approximately 80% of Australia’s methanol requirements.

The process of manufacturing methanol here involves natural gas being fed to the plant via a pipeline from the main Melbourne to Geelong trunkline. The gas is compressed and then purified, before being saturated with recycled water and fed to the reformer where it is partially converted to synthesis gas. This partially converted gas is then completely converted to synthesis gas by reaction with oxygen in the secondary reformer where it is then converted to crude methanol in the catalytic synthesis converter.

Request:
The catalyst in the converter is a copper based material and has a finite life.  In order to remove it and replace it with new, it is necessary to introduce high pressure oil free dry air to oxidise it in a controlled environment.

Solution:
PNS1250 Class Zero portable diesel compressor
PHS1250 Desiccant dryer

Atlas Copco Rental were able to support Coogee Energy with the supply of a portable High Pressure, Class Zero Oil Free air compressor and desiccant dryer package as pictured here.

Added Value:
Robert Cheyney of Coogee Energy said, “We have had  problems in the past maintaining the dryness in the air  but the Atlas Copco equipment made the process an  absolute breeze and we  were very happy with the  performance”.
