Webster Drilling were awarded a contract early in 2009 for drilling services on the Gorgon LNG Project CO2 re-capture program. This was a very challenging project as Gorgon LNG is being built on Barrow Island, a class A nature reserve.

The project involved the drilling of just under 1000 holes as a part of a 3 dimensional seismic survey which will be repeated at intervals during the term of the project. This program will be to monitor the growth of the CO2 gas that will be stripped from the Gorgon gas and injected into a geological structure beneath the island. To conform to the project requirements and the strict environmental protocols all equipment is either custom built and / or modified accordingly.

XAVS340 air compressor in specially designed frame is lifted into position on Barrow Island

To execute this project Webster Drilling needed to build special light weight drill rigs which could be moved around site via helicopter. All equipment needed to pass stringent quarantine inspections which included pesticide fogging and wrapping in cling film. Seven drill rigs were required, six for operation and one for standby along with operators and service technicians. Each drill rig required one 350 cfm compressor (Atlas Copco model XAVS340) to run the drill. All compressors were fitted into specially made and certified heli-sling lifting frames to facilitate placement at each drill site.

Solution:
7 x XAVS340 14 bar oil flooded compressors
Specially designed heli-sling lifting frames

Added value:
Our XAVS340s were brand new allowing them to pass straight through quarantine. The greatest added value came from the higher 14 bar pressure rating of the XAVS340, allowing faster drilling speeds and delivering increased productivity to Webster Drilling.

Elements of success:
Through effective customer/supplier interaction Webster Drilling and Atlas Copco Specialty Rental worked together to resolve the challenges of working on Barrow Island. The experience gained from this project will help both companies enjoy even greater success on future projects.
