Compressor helps E.ON ensure environmental compliance

The story about Scholven is a story about helping the environment. About environmental compliance and ecological consciousness. 
One of Europe’s largest hard coal fuelled power stations, Scholven is owned and operated by E.ON Kraftwerke GmbH, an Atlas Copco Gas and Process customer.   And like many other companies today, E.ON has been faced with stricter environmental guidelines for emissions. 
To comply with the new laws, companies such as E.ON are forced to employ sophisticated means to denitrify and desulphurize their emissions. They also have to deal with the abundance of by-products that emerge during power-station generation. 
As a result, nearly all of Scholven’s by-products are now being recycled, processed, and then used in other areas such as the construction industry.
Atlas Copco compressors make a contribution to this process: In power stations such Scholven, they help plant operators comply with environmental requirements.

By-products reused in many ways
But what exactly does environmental consciousness mean in Scholven? 
One key by-product is flue ash, used by the construction industry as a cement substitute in concrete. In transporting the flue ash, E.ON Kraftwerke uses an Atlas Copco machine, a four-stage compressor installed in 2002. Floating on a cushion of air, the flue ash is transported across the premises – about one kilometer in all.
Proper storage is crucial at Scholven: after all, more flue ash is generated during the cold winter months. However, the construction industry’s demand is greater in the summer, the primary building season of the year. 
In other words: With the next winter being a sure thing, the Atlas Copco compressor will get plenty of opportunity to “air it out” and blow the Scholven flue ash to its proper destination – and that also means keeping it out of the environment.
