Quarry Applications at a Glance – Mining Diorama of Atlas Copco Construction Tools


The Atlas Copco Mining Diorama is a graphical representation of all possible quarry applications of the company’s products. It explains processes, shows potential applications and equipment combinations and gives a general insight into rock mining possibilities.<BR>

After the enormous success of the demolition diorama, Atlas Copco Construction Tools have now developed a similar graphical representation for the mining sector.

A selection of some applications:

Direct mining
Quarry operators have learnt that the use of large hydraulic breakers in rock mining without blasting is practicable. Statutory restrictions, environmental aspects, safety regulations relating to the use of explosives, restrictions to operation, the profitability of mining operations and the increasing demands on product quality are all possible reasons for changing the mining method.

Since there are no two identical quarries anywhere in the world, every quarry operator has to check if the use of hydraulic breakers is a practical alternative. Not only the loosening performance but the entire process from loosening the rock up to the saleable product has to be commercially analysed.

Selective mining
Selective mining allows different rock grades to be removed separately from an inhomogeneous deposit, so that the deposit can be fully utilized and higher sales proceeds can be achieved.

It is virtually impossible to selectively mine rock from damaged, fissured or complex seamed deposits by drilling and blasting. For this particular type of application the hydraulic breaker can adapt to the operating conditions far better than any other piece of equipment. A combined solution is also possible, the hydraulic breaker being used for selective mining and the drilling and blasting method being adopted for standard mining.

Secondary breaking
Secondary breaking is needed when after blasting large lumps of rock remain which cannot be lifted by the loader or which are too big to fit into the jaw of the primary crusher. The significance of an economic breaking of oversize boulders is therefore increasing as the rocks can often be sold with a good profit for slope, dry wall or hydraulic engineering purposes. The hydraulic breaker should be of adequate size since the breaking performance is directly related to its single-impact energy.

Stationary breaking at the primary crusher
Hydraulic breakers attached to a stationary boom ensure a smooth breaking performance directly at the primary crusher inlet. They break up oversize boulders that get stuck in the crusher feed opening.

Removal of overburden
The removal of overburden as well as benching and ramping operations often take place in the border area of the mine where the use of explosives and the appropriate safety measures involve a considerable expenditure. A hydraulic breaker allows the costs incurred in removing the overburden to be reduced and the speed and flexibility with which the working steps are carried to be improved. Generally the utilization ratio of the deposit can be increased since a selectively operating breaker can now also be used to remove overburden that would normally be removed by conventional equipment.

Ashlar mining
Lightweight pneumatic rock hammer drills are particularly suitable for secondary drilling work and for drilling holes needed for small blasting operations. Rock hammer drills can be attached to drill rigs for applications in the ashlar industry. These drill rigs allow several hammer drills to be used paralelly and therefore holes to be drilled at a higher speed and with a higher precision.
