(Portland, Oregon USA) Atlas Copco Wagner Inc. has announced the introduction of their new ST600LP, a 6-tonne capacity, low profile LHD that is specifically designed and built for low seam applications in the platinum and palladium mines in South Africa. The product is being introduced and marketed by Atlas Copco Wagner as the Ratel???. The Ratel is an aggressive and fierce South African four-legged animal known as the honey badger. It is a powerful digger.

Atlas Copco Wagner announces that it has received a major, initial order of 21 units of the ST600LP for the Waterval Project, and recently received a second order for 3 additional units. The first units have already been delivered to the customer in the Rustenburg area, north of Johannesburg.

???For several years, we have studied the emerging vehicle requirement for these markets in South Africa,??? said Ross Tilson, Atlas Copco Wagner???s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. ???Two years ago we conducted extensive research to determine the size of the market, capacity of scoop needed, and timetable,??? he added. ???We listened to all the customers indicating a desire to have a low seam height vehicle that could operate in mines with back heights as low as 1700 mm. We did more research to determine options, cycles, and performance needed.

???We learned that a 6-tonne capacity unit would have the best chance for market success and our prospective customers asked that it be made rugged, simple, and easy to operate and maintain,??? Tilson stated. ???And that???s what we have delivered for this special market application,??? he concluded.

Dave Ogilvie, Atlas Copco Wagner???s Regional Territory Manager for southern Africa, said, ???We are very pleased to have our loader be so immediately accepted by customers in the platinum industry in South Africa. We are excited at the confidence placed in our company and product by the management of the Waterval Project.???

Ogilvie added, ???There are numerous other mines and projects that we are working with in southern Africa to introduce The Ratel. It???s proving to have all the characteristics of its namesake. It???s tough, aggressive, compact and a fierce little digger.???

The ST600LP, with a tramming capacity of 6000 kg, is powered by the Deutz water-cooled engine, Model BF6M1013E, which provides 136 kW of power. The ST600LP has several bucket volume sizes, nominally heaped for loose ore weight, ranging from 2.24 T/cubic meter to 2.87 T/cubic meter These bucket volumes are appropriately sized to match the user???s broken ore density.

The ST600LP is 8712 mm in overall length. The width of the bucket is 1956 mm. The Waterval units have a bucket width of 2156 mm. The unit has 355 mm of ground clearance. With an overall height to top of operator canopy of 1610 mm, the ST600LP Ratel will operate easily in areas of 1700 mm, which is quite typical in the Rustenburg area. To achieve the low machine height of 1610 mm, the ST600LP requires the operator to be seated lower on the vehicle. This is accomplished by having the operator compartment extended out beyond the natural width of the vehicle. The operator???s compartment extends 1.61 m from the vehicle???s centre line.

Since width is not a critical dimension in the platinum and palladium mines in South Africa, placing the operator in such a lowered and wide position poses no problem that cannot be overcome with on-board video cameras. The ST600LP includes two cameras, one focused to the rear and the other viewing forward. Coupled with a video screen, these cameras permit the vehicle???s directional view to be seen clearly by the operator.

The exhaust system includes a catalytic purifier plus exhaust silencer. The electrical system voltage is 24 volts for both starter and accessories.

The vehicle???s drive train includes a transmission with modulated power shift and three speeds forward and reverse. The transmission is a Spicer model, Series 32000. The converter, also from Spicer, is single stage and is Series C-270. The axles are Wagner???s own Rock Tough® brand, with a spiral bevel differential and full floating, planetary wheel end drive, Series 406. The axles are covered by a full 24-month or 4000-hour, whichever comes first, warranty. The vehicle brakes are the company???s patented SAHR® brake system, which is Spring-Applied and Hydraulically Released. The brakes are fully enclosed, oil-cooled, multiple wet discs at each wheel end. The Parking and Emergency brakes are the same SAHR system.

The 17.5 x 25, 20-ply, L5S tires are tubeless nylon of the smooth tread design for underground mine service.

The articulated hydraulic power steering with mono-stick control results in a turning angle of 85 degrees (42.5 degrees in either direction).

The rear axle is trunnion-mounted with self-lubricating bushings. Rear axle oscillation is 7 degrees in either direction for a total of 14 degrees. The empty, operating weight of the ST600LP is 17330 kg. (38,200 lbs.).
