The 100th Atlas Copco ROC D7 Hydraulic Crawler Drill Delivery Ceremony

Jan 18th, 2008, was an important day for Atlas Copco. Atlas Copco (Nanjing) Construction and Mining Equipment Ltd. handed over the 100th ROC D7 hydraulic crawler drill being produced in China to China Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Bureau No 11 (CWB11).
Stephan Kuhn, President of Atlas Copco CMT Surface Drilling Equipment, Freddy Man, General Manager of Atlas Copco CMT Customer Center Greater China, David Luo, General Manager of Atlas Copco (Nanjing) Construction and Mining Equipment Ltd. and representatives from Sinohydro Leasing Corporation, CWB11 and Shenzhen Nectar attend the ceremony.
"This is a moment of historical significance! It indicates that the production of Atlas Copco hydraulic crawler drill rigs and our China market strategy have been successful." said Freddy Man.
Stephan Kuhn said: ”The ROC D7 hydraulic crawler drill was launched in 1999 and since then 1,500 units have been delivered to customers around the world. It is the most successful hydraulic surface drill rig in the world. At the moment, the most widely used drill rig in China is pneumatic crawlers but Atlas Copco ROC D7 hydraulic surface drill rig is the most popular one among hydraulic crawlers. As the main supplier of pneumatic and hydraulic drilling rigs in the world, Atlas Copco has 350 units ROC D7 hydraulic crawler drill rigs operating in China. 3 years ago we decided to strongly increase the volume of ROC D7 assembled in China. As 85% of the production value of a drill rig consists of purchased components, the reason to assemble the drill rig in Nanjing was not the lower labor cost in China as compared to Sweden. There was only one reason to move the assembly and that is to be closer to our Chinese customers; we can serve them better from Nanjing and have shorter delivery time.”
Stephan Kuhn continued: ”Further, I have made it very clear that the quality of the Nanjing ROC D7 must be at least on the same level as the ones produced in Sweden. Our quality statistics show that the quality is the same, so I want to give a big compliment to the management team and the assembly teams in this factory for their excellent performance. Over time, we will replace some European parts with parts supplied by Chinese suppliers. But I can assure you that we are in no rush to do so. We will only replace parts if the quality is good enough.”
Stephan Kuhn ended his speech by saying: ”Today we celebrate the 100th ROC D7 produced in China. This shows very clearly that our decision to move assembly to China 3 years ago was correct. Based on the success of ROC D7 we have also decided to produce other products in China. Again, the reason is to be close to our customers in terms of delivery time and ease of doing business. As a consequence, the factory hall we are standing in today will be double the size and a new factory just 2km away will be completed.”
Freddy Man and Stephan Kuhn handed over the key to the ROC D7 to the representative of CWB11, and Stephan Kuhn said: ”I am fully convinced that the ROC D7 success story will continue, and will be followed by other success stories.”
