Soil and water conservation activities in Nanded

Atlas Copco Charitable Foundation, in partnership with Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal helps combat unemployment and lack of livelihood through agricultural activities by carrying out soil and water conservation activities.

The story:

Katkalamba is a drought-prone village situated in the Nanded district having a population of 4,659. Because of its geography, the village faces frequent dry periods leading to depleting groundwater levels. The water that remains was left contaminated with fluoride. Due to such unfortunate circumstances, the locals have started migrating out in search of better opportunities.

The solution:

To combat the problems faced by the people, various initiatives have be undertaken, that contribute to the development of livelihood opportunities.

  • Check dams, loose boulder structures, gully plugs, watercourses were built to increase the absorption of rainwater into the soil and increase water retention and groundwater levels.
  • Co-operatives formed for the equitable distribution of water through lift irrigation.
  • The farming system of the village was upgraded with the introduction of new crop varieties, crop rotation, combinations use of integrated disease, pest management, etc.
  • The seasonal Kharif system of farming was diversified into a multi-crop system along with the introduction of horticulture and agroforestry.
  • Activities like cattle distribution and animal management practices to encourage secondary revenue generation.
  • Agro-based industries were encouraged to reduce the unemployment between youths and the economic dependence of women.
