EPSILON – a new standard in rotary drill bit design

When industry leaders Baker Hughes Mining Tools and Atlas Copco Secoroc joined forces in 2004, drillers around the world had every right to expect extraordinary performance. After all, both companies had made significant contributions to the advancement of rock drilling technology.
The market didn’t have to wait long. Atlas Copco Secoroc is now set to launch a new benchmark in rotary drill bit design – Epsilon.

Turning science into productivity

A product of scientific methodology
During the development phase of Epsilon, nothing was left to chance. A rigorous engineering approach was adopted to ensure that time and resources were put to the best possible use. Productivity and performance were elevated to a science.
 
New rigs called for new thinking
A key development driver for Epsilon has been the introduction of new drill rigs with larger air packages, such as the Atlas Copco PV271. With these machines, the hole annulus can be increased by using smaller drill pipes, allowing for the evacuation of larger cuttings. That’s why Epsilon bits feature a streamlined lug. As larger drill cuttings can be transported out of the hole – instead of falling back to be reground to smaller pieces – there’s less bit wear.
 
Mathematically calculated to maximize productivity
Cutting structures (the placement of tungsten carbide inserts - TCI) and bearing geometry have been optimized to distribute load more uniformly over the bearings. The result? Smoother bit performance, sustained penetration rates over longer periods of time and reduced risk of bearing failure. As an added bonus, full body armour (wear resistant TCI) minimizes wear on both bit body and shirt-tail.
Ultimately, drillers can now look forward to faster penetration, a longer bit life and a significantly lower Total Drilling Cost.
 
Lean manufacturing provides quicker response
As with our HD and MAG ranges, the new Epsilon bits are produced in accordance with a lean manufacturing process. This allows us to respond swiftly to shifting customer demands – for example, a change of diameter can be handled quickly and without fuss. 
Customers will be provided with tailored drill bit solutions whenever their application calls for it, thereby ensuring maintained efficiency and striking performance at all times. After all, speedy delivery is a vital component in achieving maximum productivity.
