Atlas Copco to increase manufacturing capacity in Sweden

2005-05-04

Stockholm, Sweden, May 3, 2005: Atlas Copco is to expand its facilities in Örebro, Sweden, for the manufacturing of mining and tunnelling equipment. The company is to invest SEK 40 million (approx. EUR 4.4 m) in a new plant for the assembly of loaders and mine trucks.

The decision follows the announcement of strong growth and record profits for the Swedish group which is a world leader in rock excavation equipment, compressed air, industrial tools and assembly systems.

Lars Engström, President of the Atlas Copco division Underground Rock Excavation, emphasizes that the move is not a reaction to the current market demand but part of a long term strategy. “We have a positive view of the future and this is simply another step in our plan to increase our capacity,” he says. “It is also a timely development in view of the many new products that we have recently added to our range.”

It is the latest in a series of moves to concentrate the company’s construction and mining business to Örebro. This started in the nineties with the transfer of the manufacturing plants in Stockholm and Bremen in Germany, followed by the loader assembly facilities in Portland, Oregon, USA, which was transferred to Örebro in 2003.

The new facility is expected to lead to increased employment in the Örebro area, which is now widely regarded as a world centre for rock drilling technology. Construction will begin in May and the facilities are scheduled to be fully operational by early 2006.
