About us / About us
Hurricane Compressors was founded by John Grimmer, an engineer with an extensive history in the air compressor industry.
Grimmer and engineering colleague, Bob Schmidt, formed GrimmerSchmidt Compressors in 1968 and, shortly thereafter, relocated to Franklin, Indiana. At that time, compressors built from this technology served primarily the construction industry.
In the early 1970's, the gasoline shortage prompted the Company to develop a compressor to provide high pressure natural gas for vehicle fueling. The technology gained from natural gas compression enabled the Company to move into the high pressure air and booster markets serving the oil, gas and mining industries.
In 1993, the GrimmerSchmidt product line was sold, but Grimmer retained the high pressure and booster air and gas divisions and formed Hurricane Compressors. The small size and lightweight features gave the product line a huge advantage over the competition. The sales of these uniquely engineered boosters grew to 25 million USD in 2007. Hurricane repurchased GrimmerSchmidt Compressors in 2000.
Hurricane Compressors was aquired in May 2008 by the Atlas Copco Group and changed its name to Atlas Copco Hurricane LLC.
Still located in Franklin (Indiana – USA), Atlas Copco Hurricane LLC operates with approximately 80 employees and and continues to manufacture, sell and service boosters and air compressors under the brands of Hurricane™ and GrimmerSchmidt™.
Supplying air power to the most rugged industries in the most extreme environments requires robust, reliable equipment. Our customers in the fields of mining; pipeline testing; well servicing; seismic exploration; and oil, gas and water drilling operate around the globe, often in remote locations and severe climates. Atlas Copco Hurricane rises to these challenges by offering world-class products whose dependability, adaptability, and serviceability are the keys to optimal performance.
"We are happy to be part of the Atlas Copco Group. Our products are a perfect fit with the Atlas Copco high pressure compressors. Their global sales & service network will enable us to explore new markets and service our customers even better. It is a win-win situation and I am looking forward to the new opportunities!" (Richard Baker, VP marketing Atlas Copco Hurricane LLC)
"We have seen increased demand for higher pressures from customers in oil and gas industries. The Hurricane boosters directly meet this demand and are an excellent complement to our offer. The acquisition is a strategic step to strengthen our position in these market segments."
