Atlas Copco Airpower leads industry in environmental care


Antwerp, Belgium and Stockholm, Sweden - July 24th, 2001 - Atlas Copco Airpower strengthened its leadership in state-of-the-art compressor manufacturing when it received the ISO 14001 certificate of approval. This certification by Lloyd’s Register of Quality Assurance confirms the Environmental Management System, as implemented by Airpower in the design and manufacturing of air compressors, generator sets and accessories, to be in accordance with the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard.

“Atlas Copco Airpower in Antwerp is the largest facility within the Compressor Technique business area, so we consider this certificate to be an important milestone in the implementation of an Environmental Management System in the whole Atlas Copco Group” says Bengt Kvarnbäck, Senior Executive Vice President and Head of Compressor Technique.

Atlas Copco’s Environmental Management System (EMS) applies to much more than just product specifications or waste handling. It is a total concept, which is carried through every business process, from design and purchasing, over machining and assembly to marketing, distribution and service.

To Atlas Copco, the underlying core belief is that environmental care is not an additional cost or a legislative burden. It is seen as a mean to offer increased value to the customer – and thus a business opportunity.
The range of VSD compressors is a typical example. Thanks to an electronic variable speed drive, those machines save customers up to a third in energy consumption. This is an obvious benefit both for the customer’s bottom line and for the environment.
Another example is noise reduction. A new testing scheme brought down overall noise levels at the plant and greatly improved community relations. In product design, noise reduction is a prime parameter as well and engineers and designers have undergone special training on the subject. The new models attain such a low noise level that customers can put the compressors on the shop floor, close to the work site. Expensive compressor rooms are no longer required and the cost of piping is reduced.

Throughout Airpower’s four divisions, the implementation of EMS has meant that electronic communi-cations and filing have significantly reduced paper consumption. Selective waste handling is in place – even copper, aluminium and iron are recycled – and people have been trained to distinguish the different materials. Packaging has been reduced to the bare minimum, both for incoming goods – in close co-operation with suppliers – as for products leaving the factory. Alternative means of transportation, such as by ship or rail, are being implemented instead of adding to the pollution of heavily congested road traffic.

These examples clearly demonstrate Airpower’s pro-active approach towards environmental care. Internal rules and policies are often much more stringent than what is required by law. Airpower therefore considers the ISO 14001 not as a culmination of its efforts, but as an acknowledgement that it is on the right track in combining environment-friendliness with customer benefits.
