Atlas Copco in pole position in the mineral exploration race
Worldwide growth in mineral exploration has put Atlas Copco in pole position with its strong focus on exploration technique and an impressive portfolio of innovative products. Atlas Copco Craelius, the Group’s division for exploration drilling and ground engineering, is reporting record figures for 2006 thanks to the global boom in exploration.
Hans Lidén, divisional President, attributes this strong growth to: “Atlas Copco’s long-term dedication to the business of exploration and our investment in product innovation which has resulted in one of the strongest product ranges in the market today.”
Lidén adds that the outlook is also positive for the division’s ground engineering sector, which is showing more stable and consistent growth.
Innovation in exploration
Another key development is in surface core drilling applications where Atlas Copco’s Christensen surface drilling rigs have received considerable market appreciation for their robust and reliable design.
A complete Christensen range in place
Shortly after it was launched two years ago, the new Christensen CS14 became a standard solution for exploration in remote areas where mechanical reliability is crucial.
Now the latest addition to the Christensen range, the Christensen CS10, has brought a new measure of innovation to the light equipment segment. Rated slightly over 1000 metres vertical depth in B size, 760 metres in N size, 460 metres H size and 300 metres P size wireline coring, the CS10 is designed to reduce the total weight of the equipment without compromising productivity or performance. Mounted on a single-axle trailer, the rig can be disassembled in modules for helicopter transportation.
The new Diamec U4 completes the Diamec range
The unit offers an innovative, compact, hollow spindle rotation unit, featuring fewer components for reduced maintenance costs. A boom, derived from the experiences gained with the larger Diamec U6, enables easy and fast positioning. A telescopic hydraulic cylinder replaces chains or steel ropes on the feed, reducing wear and assuring smoother feeding force. This enhances penetration rates and diamond bit life.
Diamec U4 is available both with a manual control system, and with the more sophisticated APC control system (Automatic Performance Control). The APC system makes it a true one-man operating rig that improves the drilling process, increases bit life and saves money for the owner. Fully automatic or pilot-controlled, the Diamec U4 is also expected to radically improve the drilling process in grouting operations in dam projects.
Diamec U4 is able to core drill in A, B and N size and, with A size, offers a depth capacity of more than 500 metres.
