Classification Societies

Our compressors can be built according to the Rules and Requirements of all classification societies.

We are standard complying with the rules for non-essential service compressors. However we can build the compressors for:

  1. essential services
  2. witnessed by the surveyor
  3. non-essential services

For working and service air, there is quite a difference in the requirements of the various classification societies.  For starting air, on the contrary, the requirements of all the classification societies are essential duty, except for ABS.

So far, we have units delivered according to LRS, ABS, BV, DNV, RINA, CCS, NK, KR and PMRS.

Concerning Classification notations we are complying with EP, CLEAN, CLEAN DESIGN, COMFORT CLASSES, etc.

What are essential services?

1. Essential or primary essential services are those services that need to be in continuous operation for maintaining the vessel's manoeuverability with regard to propulsion and steering. Essential services are also those services that need not necessarily be in continuous operation for maintaining for the vessel's manoeuverability, but which are necessary for maintaining the vessel's functions.

2. Examples of equipment with air applications which can be classed as essential services would be:

  • air compressors for oil engines
  • air pumps
  • ballast pumps
  • bilge pumps
  • inert gas fans/compressors, scrubber and deck seal pumps
  • navigational aids where required by Statutory Regulations
  • power sources and supply systems for supplying the above services
  • cargo handling and cargo care equipment
  • hotel services, other than those required for habitable conditions

What is witnessed by the surveyor?

This means that the Atlas Copco test is witnessed with the surveyor and the test report is stamped by the surveyor to indicate correctness. The surveyor can also issue a socalled Third Party Certification , which will state that the unit is running and tested according to the manufacture test report as witnessed by the surveyor. However, the surveyor can also issue a certificate indicating that the unit is fit to be used on board of a vessel.

What are non-essential services?

Non-essential services do not exist and the term indicates units with applications that are not listed for essential services. Therefore, there are no rule requirements for non-essential services and the class cannot issue a Non-Essential Service certificate. The compressors need to comply with the general rule requirement like all other equipment and as mentioned in the rules.

Apart from the requirements above, the classification can assign specific class notations to the vessel. A few examples concerning compressors could be: IG, Comfort Class, EP, Clean and Clean Design, etc.

Atlas Copco can not decide which certificate needs to come with the equipment. This should be requested by the customer. Of course we can give advice if requested. The rules of several classification societies can be found or even purchased at their websites.
