Atlas Copco works continuously to improve resource efficiency in the manufacturing process and in the value chain.

Energy prices have been rising steadily which ultimately leads to higher costs, both financially and environmentally. The reporting includes energy consumption in terms of direct and indirect energy as well as in renewable and non-renewable energy. The Group has committed to constructing energy and resource-efficient buildings and some operations have installed solar panels. Read more about Atlas Copco’s green buildings*.

The Group recognizes that there are not only risks but opportunities related to energy consumption and therefore has a goal to increase customer energy efficiency of 20% by 2020 by increasing energy efficiency in major product categories.

Materials used in the production process and for packing of finished products or parts are tracked and reported. In terms of weight, steel represents more than 90% of the raw material used in production, which is recycled to a large extent. The use of recycled steel for its raw materials provides an opportunity to reduce both operational costs and the environmental impact. Regarding other materials, Atlas Copco has lists of substances of concern to ensure that only approved substances are used in its production and supply chain.

Water consumption is considerably lower than for some of the Group’s industry peers. This is due to that Atlas Copco’s business model for example does not include steel production. For this reason, the goal is to keep water consumption at the current level. Atlas Copco has mapped and investigated where its operations overlap with water stressed areas using the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Water Risk tool. While the Group addresses water risks, and works with water-related issues, it also presents significant opportunities. Many of the customers work in water-intensive industries such as textile or mining, and could benefit from innovative products that consume less water.
