16.08.2016 – Chambly, France – In the first half of this year, Atlas Copco Railway Competence Center brought its first range of two-stage oil-free scroll compressors to the global railway market, already delivering over 30 units to the Asian market. This quiet and compact range was validated through rigorous lab and field testing. The one-stage version is already being used by many fleets world-wide, delivering compressed air to thousands of rolling stock for almost two decades. The introduction of the two-stage variant has well-known international railway car builders and operators increase their inquiries and orders for this reliable technology. The new range will be showcased for the first time at the Innotrans fair in Berlin, September 20-23th, 2016.

Customer comfort

The two-stage oil-free scroll is to be used underneath, inside or on the rooftop of the vehicle. Customer comfort is increased as this technology is characterized by low level mass vibrations and compressed air pulsations safeguarding passengers and the vehicle’s air system against unwanted noise, vibrations or reduced air quality.

Efficient operations, minimum maintenance

As its name reveals, the two-stage oil-free scroll compresses air in two phases, whereas both scroll stages are encapsulated together in one single solid housing and direct shaft driven in one line by the flanged electric motor. With the introduction of the two-stage configuration, Atlas Copco’s oil-free scroll range now spans a capacity of 200 up to 1.500 lpm (7-53 cfm) with a compressor outlet of up to 11 bar (160 psi). This allows for pressure reserve and guarantees 10 bar (145 psi) operation pressure in the vehicle’s compressed air system under all circumstances. The smart cooling system, matching the surrounding conditions, allows for a delayed ventilation stop which removes latent heat and immediately starts at cold conditions reaching operation temperature. The range is maintenance-free (beside filters) for 8.000 operation hours, which typically means 4 to 6 years. Small element maintenance is due at 8.000 hours, overhaul at 24.000 hours.

Taking all this into account, André de Backer is convinced the new range will bring a lot of value to the market and already sees its positive impact: “Over the last three years we performed rigorous field tests whole year round with excellent results. A recipe which sparked the industry’s interest and has well-known international railway car builders and operators increasing their inquiries and orders for this reliable technology. Atlas Copco has a long and proud history in the industry and built its first locomotive nearly 140 years ago. The two-stage oil-free scroll technology is yet another step towards continuing that outstanding tradition.”
