Nitrogen gas for tyres safety and longevity

Nitrogen has many advantages over air when used to inflate tyres. It minimises the risk of pressure instability, aging of the inner tyre, rim rust & tyre fires.

Did you know?

... that you can inflate tyres with nitrogen instead of air?

At Atlas Copco we have solutions for nitrogen inflation systems for all types of tyres, whether of passenger car, aircraft or commercial vehicles like buses, trucks, road train trailers or haul trucks for mining.

Why use nitrogen for tyre filling?

Nitrogen is safer – N2 being an inert gas mitigates fire risk and keeps tyres cool and increases tyre life. The cooler running temperature of nitrogen has further safety benefits beyond the prevention of fires.

Pyrolysis is the chemical decomposition of a material due to high temperatures. It can occur in tyres when they heat up excessively as they move at high speed or carry heavy loads, brake a lot, or are subject to misalignment or brake malfunction.

This heat will cause decomposition of the rubber and will release flammable and explosive vapors inside the tyre. While extreme heating and the presence of pyrolysis gases inside the tire cannot always be prevented, limiting oxygen levels in the tyre to maximum 5% can completely remove the risk of explosion.

Nitrogen preserves tyre pressure – N2 escapes the inner liner or tube of the tyre at a slower rate than compressed air. It’s because of its larger molecular structure, which reduces the risk of deflation and unnecessary sources of heat. It can take up to six months for nitrogen-filled tyres to lose 0.14 kilopascals of pressure compared with just one month with compressed air.

The benefits of using nitrogen for tyre inflation

  • Minimises the fire risk – nitrogen is an inert, non-flammable gas
  • Improves the tyre life – tyres are running at a cooler temperatures and therefore reduces the frequency of replacing tyres
  • Reduces corrosion – there is no moisture in pure, dry nitrogen

Higher gas mileage, longer tyre life and cost savings are major benefits of using a nitrogen gas generator for tyre inflation. Nitrogen gas eliminates oxidation (which causes premature tyre wear) and offers better tyre pressure retention. The bottom line is a safer, smoother ride, improved fuel economy, and prolonged tyre life.

Mining trucks in focus: safety benefits

Atlas Copco nitrogen for tyre inflation
In haul trucks in mining, tyre-related issues are often the culprit for heavy vehicle accidents such as explosions caused by lightning strikes or high temperature degradation. We believe that to reduce the likelihood of these accidents, it’s not just about the tyre or how you use it, but also what you put in it. Tyre-related accidents are a common risk at mine sites, with the 2015 Major Accident Investigation Report revealing that 33 per cent of truck fires were due to issues with wheels and tyres. The lightning strike hazard can cause truck tyres to explode and result in extensive damage to the upper structure of the truck, including the deck, engine and cab, destroying the entire truck. (source: The Western Australian Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety). The cooler running temperature of nitrogen improves the tyre life, reduces frequency of their replacement and increases tyre safety by minimising the risk of fires.
