The Critical Role of Nitrogen in Plastics Manufacturing

January 8, 2025

Plastic is everywhere in our daily lives; packaging materials, children’s toys, household items, and beyond. As a cornerstone of modern manufacturing, the plastics industry continuously evolves to meet growing demands. But here’s something you might not know: nitrogen plays a vital role in ensuring the quality and efficiency of plastic production.

How Is Nitrogen Used in Plastics Manufacturing?

1. Injection Molding

In plastic molding, oxygen exposure can cause oxidation and discoloration, which compromise the quality of the finished product. Nitrogen, being an inert gas, displaces oxygen within the mold, preserving the material’s integrity and delivering flawless results.

2. Gas Assist Injection Molding (GAIM)

GAIM is a sophisticated process used to produce large or thick plastic components. After partially filling a mold with molten polymer, high-pressure nitrogen is injected to prevent shrinkage during cooling. This helps the polymer expand evenly, filling the mold completely without weakening the final structure.

3. Plastic Extrusion

Plastic extrusion is used to create items such as pipes, tubing, and weather stripping. In this process, raw plastic is melted and pushed through a die to form a continuous shape. Nitrogen is critical here—it displaces oxygen to prevent residue build-up, safeguarding both the product’s quality and the longevity of the equipment.

4. Tank Blanketing

Before molding begins, molten plastic is often stored in tanks. To prevent oxidation, nitrogen gas blankets the tank, creating an oxygen-free environment. This protects the polymer’s properties and ensures consistent quality throughout the process.
