Heavy rains caused by so-called “Fenomeno del Nino Costero” left Peru in an emergency state: 143 lives were lost, 18 people missing and total loss is estimated over 4000 million dollars. The regions in the North of the country were the most affected by this unusual rain season: more than 260 thousands affected houses, 822 useless bridges and more than 2000 damaged schools are part of the horrible consequences after the natural disasters.

The solidarity and the social commitment registered in Atlas Copco’s heart offered a prompt response to the desperate situation that Peru was facing. Colonel Jorge Uribe, Chief of the Army Heritage, and Stephen Cartwright, Power Technique General Manager for the Latin America region, signed an agreement on March 28th for the delivery of 3 water pumps to relieve the horrible flooding in Piura, a city in the north. The coordinated actions between the Peruvian Army and Atlas Copco Portable Energy allowed the pumps to get to the affected areas on the same day that the agreement was signed.

At the end of March, Piura endured more than 24 hours of rain, causing the river to overflow and consequently the city to flood. Whole neighbourhoods, shopping centers, hospitals and even Plaza de Armas remained deeply flooded and hundreds of people were evacuated. At the end of April, the effects of the floods were recorded at: 39841 people affected, 4183 uninhabitable houses and 70% of the road system left with serious damages.

According to the signed agreement between Atlas Copco and the Peruvian Army, the centrifugal pumps WEDA 70L 460V, ETP 50B and PAS 4 DDT-W220 were borrowed for 60 days. Hidrostal, our pump distributor in the north of Peru, was very helpful in the organization for draining the flooded areas. Thanks to the contacts provided by Hidrostal, it was possible to coordinate with Entidad Prestadora de Servicios de Saneamiento Grau (EPS Grau), a company responsible for production and supply of potable water in this department. With EPS Grau, the pumps were able to start operating, providing a solution to the flood water so that it would no longer endanger public health.

The pumps started operating 24 hours a day to drain the flooded areas in Santa Maria in Piura and the pumping chamber at La Primavera in Castilla which was broken due to the river overflowing at the end of March.

“ We are very grateful because the equipment offered by Atlas Copco are fulfilling with a proper work for the rehabilitation of the affected areas. The moto pump ETP 50B has been used in the fronts of Las Gardenias, Santa Maria and Centro Urbano of Piura; while submersible electric pump WEDA 70L is using in the damaged drains rehabilitation in the chamber of Miraflores and La Primavera. We are working in a joint way with the Ministry of Housing and we have a working plan of 60 days to solve the problem. ”

Roberto Sandoval , Manager of Operations and Maintenance EPS Grau
