Atlas Copco Rental diesel oil free air proved to be the best solution for continuous air supply at Tata Steel plant in India

March 17, 2016

Antwerp, Belgium, March 17, 2016: Atlas Copco PTS 916 compressors were on rent at Tata Steel, Kalinganagar, where the project requirement was to install a 3.3 MTPA integrated steel plant in its first phase.
When uninterrupted electric power was the limitation in commissioning of steel plant, Atlas Copco Rental diesel oil free air proved to be the best solution for continuous air supply.

PTS 916 at work!

One of the leading steel manufacturers in India, Tata Steel, needed to power its coke plant with air at Kalinganagar, in order to provide fuel for the other units of the steel plant like blast furnace, steel melting shop and hot strip metal, in the commissioning phase.

Coke is a purified form of carbon which keeps on burning and provides gases for the smelting process and other steel processing requirements which deliver high end steel products.
The coke plant needs to have continuous air supply once fired and cannot afford any air supply loss for a period of at least 3 months. Presently, electric power is supplied only through Odisha Grid which gives fluctuations in the frequency of 1-2 power cuts as disturbances per month.

In the absence of continuous power, restarting the battery can result in huge losses. Any such loss will directly result in loss of resources and valuable time. Tata Steel usually has their own electric compressors in the by-product plant with inbuilt redundancy but till they get their own captive power plant (CPP) working they cannot rely on only electric compressors. Atlas Copco PTS compressors give the advantage of a reasonable stop gap arrangement of continuous supply of compressed air till their captive power plant becomes functional.

Atlas Copco Rental diesel oil free air was successfully used for firing of the Coke Oven battery plant over a period of 4 months in the Tata KPO project at Kalinganagar.

The Atlas Copco team was very attentive and helpful and because of their efforts, we were able to continue with uninterrupted battery heating. The sales and service team I interacted with, were very knowledgeable and seemed genuinely interested in helping us find a solution that met our needs, while providing us with end to end solutions
