Fast response saves entire sector from production stop
The Cabot Corporation is one of the world’s leading providers of specialty chemicals and performance materials. And as one of the most important sources of carbon black in Europe for everything from car tires and other industrial rubber products to insulation, coatings and even ink… any interruption to supply at its Ravenna plant in central Italy would have a massive impact on the entire manufacturing sector. In other words, there was a lot at stake when Cabot Italiana first made the call to our colleagues at Atlas Copco Rental Italy after a breakdown of their mainline compressor. They urgently needed a replacement that could deliver the high volumes and high pressures of 100% oil-free air required to prevent a full-scale production stop. Fortunately, Diego Zoccarato, Sales Area Manager North-East Italy and Sardinia and his team once again came up with the goods (and the knowhow!) to get the plant back online in no time.

The specificities of the carbon black production process and the extremely high standards of quality and purity required of the end product called for an equally specific and high-quality solution. And the potential cost of any interruption in production – not only for the plant itself but the many downstream processes that depend on it – meant that it had to be fast!
Total solution: delivering (under) high pressure
“To keep the plant online, Cabot needed a replacement compressor not only up to the task of delivering the required 1,433 SCFM of compressed air,” explains Diego Zoccarato, Sales Area Manager at Atlas Copco Rental Italy. “Our solution also had to deliver 100% oil-free air to prevent even the minutest risk of contaminating the end product.”
The solution therefore comprised our advanced Atlas Copco PTE1500 100% oil-free electric compressor along with a 1500kva transformer. Employing incredibly precision machined rotors that require no lubrication, the PTE1500 guarantees true, TÜV Class 0 certified oil-free air along with very efficient and economical performance to deliver the high pressures and flow rates required by the plant in a single unit.
