2nd Annual National Conference on Energy Efficiency: Unlocking Energy Efficiency Progress Through Public-Private Partnerships

Wednesday, 9 October 2024 | Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC)

2nd conference on energy efficiency in Kuala Lumpur with MGTC and collaborated companies

The 2nd Annual National Energy Efficiency Conference (NECC) brought together more than 200 industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and advocates to share their collective knowledge and best practices, increase awareness on advanced energy efficiency solutions, and foster a collaborative environment to drive concrete measures for energy efficiency progress.

Following the success of the inaugural event in 2023, this year’s conference delved into technologies that deliver energy efficiency gains for industries, the supportive ecosystem required to accelerate the adoption of high-efficiency technologies, and new or strengthened measures to help industries transition to a sustainable future.

According to IEA, doubling the global pace of energy efficiency progress by 2030 is key to reaching net zero emissions. To underpin its commitment, Malaysia launched the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) in 2023 which elevates the importance of energy efficiency as the first out of six energy transition levers. The strengthened Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2023 (EECA), an important piece of legislation followed suit to regulate energy consumption in three areas namely large energy consumers within the industrial and commercial sectors, office buildings and electrical products.

Foundation of the National Energy Efficiency Conference

The Foundation of National Energy Efficiency Conference (NEEC) was established in October 2023 to gather like-minded stakeholders to scale up and speed up the deployment of innovative technologies and solutions to realize the National Energy Transition Roadmap. The Collaboration sets out to:

  • Advocate for improved minimum energy efficiency standards for industry equipment and systems;
  • Share best practices and innovative technologies to accelerate retrofitting of public and government buildings;
  • Engage key stakeholders including energy providers, regulators, users and influencers in knowledge-sharing dialogues on energy efficiency; and
  • Establish knowledge partners to expand the collaboration and to help industries identify technology and solutions that deliver the greatest value

Founding members

With the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation at its helm, the founding members include ABB Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Atlas Copco (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Daikin Malaysia Sales & Service Sdn Bhd and Business Sweden.

“In the past, driving Energy Efficiency meant saving energy. But things are no longer that simple, if they ever were. This term has now evolved into a growing recognition that policies are most successful when they spur private sector investment in energy efficiency, giving rise to innovative solutions and savings,” said YB Tuan Haji Akmal Nasrullah bin Mohd Nasir, Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA)

“Energy efficiency policies must deliver social and economic “multiple benefits” and environmental outcomes. It cannot be ancillary to mainstream policy functions. We in the government must fundamentally rethink energy efficiency and treat it as an energy source in its own right, representing the value of energy saved,” he added.

“As we know, the path to a sustainable energy future is multi-faceted. Therefore, partnerships and inclusiveness are essential to deliver impactful change. Collaborations with knowledge experts allow us to identify high-value technologies and solutions to address not only immediate energy efficiency needs but also lay the groundwork for future innovations,” said Ts. Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor, Chief Executive Officer, Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC).

To further its commitment to prioritizing energy efficiency as the cornerstone of Malaysia's energy transition, MGTC partnered with leading industry players in 2023 to establish the National Energy Efficiency Collaboration (NEEC). The collaboration brought together ABB Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Atlas Copco (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Daikin Malaysia Sales & Service Sdn Bhd, and Business Sweden to galvanize the adoption of technologies that deliver the greatest value in terms of energy savings and emissions reductions.

This year, the NEEC welcomed Schaeffler (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd as a new member, further strengthening the initiative's ability to scale energy efficiency solutions across key sectors.

The NEEC also onboarded 10 leading companies as "Energy Efficiency Champions" to spearhead the adoption of energy-saving practices and technologies. The participating companies include Riverstone Resources Sdn. Bhd., United Overseas Bank Malaysia, Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd, SKF Malaysia, Solarvest Holdings Berhad, Medivest Sdn Bhd, Alfa Laval Malaysia, Nefab Malaysia, Hartalega and F&N. As Energy Efficiency Champions, these companies will showcase their leadership and commitment to setting new industry benchmarks for sustainable energy management.

“Energy efficiency should be recognized as a source of energy in its own right, warranting investment and prioritization from both the public and private sectors ahead of more complex or costly energy sources. Given Malaysia's untapped potential for energy efficiency improvements, Business Sweden is honored to collaborate with like-minded stakeholders to build consensus and strengthen our shared commitment to putting energy efficiency first, as enshrined in NETR. By elevating energy efficiency as a strategic priority, Malaysia can unlock substantial energy savings, reduce emissions, and lay the foundation for a more sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy future,” Ludvig Hermansson, Trade Commissioner, Business Sweden in Malaysia, concluded.

Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) is an agency of the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) mandated to drive the country in the scope of Green Growth, Climate Change Mitigation and Green Lifestyle. Three national policies, in particular, the National Green Technology Policy (NGTP), the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP) and the Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP), regulated MGTC's role as a catalyst for green economic growth. MGTC's initiatives and programs focus on achieving a long-term impact by 2030 with a 45% reduction rate in the country's greenhouse gas emissions, increasing GDP from green technology by RM 100 billion and generating 230,000 green job opportunities.
