BP Turns to Atlas Copco Rental following major breakdown at its Andrew Platform
Having experienced a major failure with one of two main platform air system compressors from a competing brand, BP turned to Atlas Copco to assess the failure and advise on repairs. The damages were so important that the unit had to be removed from the platform and returned to Scotland for a full evaluation.
This is when Atlas Copco Rental got introduced to provide a temporary solution.
After review of the full damage report BP decided to implement a longer term solution minimizing maintenance, fuelling issues, etc.
Atlas Copco Rental advised for a temporary rental solution whilst BP progressed with a long term replacement project: a process that can take up to 2 years.
Fast tracking the project, BP progressed with the commissioning of Atlas Copco Rental to undertake an Offshore Survey visit. The survey reviewed the full application (location of the existing compressor, electrical and instrument services, tie-in points, lifting facilities, access and logistics to the final installation location) together with discussions with BP Andrew Team Leaders, identifying all potential issues in the replacement.
Back from offshore, the findings were discussed with BP Andrew’s Onshore Project Team and the proposed way forward fully endorsed. The BP purchase order followed within days resulting in the long term rental of an engineered GA90-10 bar electric driven air compressor: the DCR348.
Electrical and fabrication modifications to the GA90 to suit the BP Andrew application were undertaken and fully managed by Atlas Copco Rental. Completing the package for the BP pre-delivery test and inspection was to a tight timeline.
A couple of days prior to the mobilization a last minute request by BP to accommodate new restrictions offshore, was to send the package in a crate format for assembly, testing and commissioning.
Working closely with BP Andrew core crew, assembly of the package offshore was carried out jointly by Atlas Copco Rental and Atlas Copco Compressors. Completion of the mechanical rebuild was followed by installation, pre-commissioning and customer hand over: operator familiarization covering the compressor controller, operation, maintenance checks and reporting.
The DCR348 now provides lead primary air for the BP Andrew Platform. A fantastic team effort by all involved ensured the GA90 Rental compressor met with BP’s requirements and expectations.
