Over 4,000 kWh of uninterruptible power supply, with sustainable battery technology and state-of-the-art Stage V generators.

Solution

Use of a hybrid solution consisting of 7 battery storage systems (ZBC 250-575), 7 QAS+ Stage V generators (250 kVA & 160 kVA), and extensive accessories. Supplemented by remote monitoring in real time.

Result:

Resilient, demand-led energy supply with significantly reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions, and efficient operation even with varying load profiles.

Interview with project manager Johannes Ott (BAYERNOIL)

As part of the renewal of a high-pressure pipeline in Plant 5, the mobile power supply played a crucial role: Atlas Copco Rental provided machines that reliably supported the annealing, welding and other work.

 

During the work, an interview was conducted with Johannes Ott, project manager at BAYERNOIL.

Project progress and technical challenges

Interviewer:
Can you briefly outline the course of the project? What were the biggest challenges?

Johannes Ott:
The project was a planned shutdown for the renewal of an important high-pressure pipeline. The biggest challenge was to coordinate all trades and external partners in terms of time and technology in such a way that a smooth process was guaranteed within the tight time frame.

Interviewer:
What role did the generators and energy storage provided by Atlas Copco Rental play in the smooth running of the work?

Johannes Ott:
They were essential for providing stable energy for the welding technology and other systems at all times, especially in locations without a fixed power connection. Without this mobile solution, the realisation would have been much more difficult.

Interviewer:
Why did you decide to combine generators and energy storage systems? What factors were decisive for the choice?

Johannes Ott:
In view of the expected load fluctuations, the addition of battery storage systems was a decisive factor in ensuring a stable energy supply throughout and reliably avoiding potential failures. We were also able to benefit from fuel savings and lower emissions.

Energy efficiency and sustainable prospects

Interviewer:
You have already mentioned that fuel can be saved by using energy storage systems. Specifically, even by around 50% and thus emissions can be significantly reduced. In addition, shorter operating hours lead to reduced maintenance costs, and noise reduction also plays an important role. How do you assess the potential of battery storage technology for BAYERNOIL? Do you see opportunities to use them more in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability?

Johannes Ott:
Even though the focus of this project was on energy security, the aspects of emission reduction and sustainability are important. In my view, it is very positive that we were able to implement a lower-emission energy supply on a large scale in this project, an important step towards more sustainable processes. I see potential in integrating battery storage systems into our energy strategy in the long term.
