Atlas Copco Rental provides 100% autonomous nitrogen installation for inertization project

February 2, 2018

Faster Srl, an Italian shipping agency specialized in oil and chemical tankers, faced a time challenge. The on-board nitrogen installation on one of their chemicals tankers broke down, just as the ship’s 10 tanks full of ethyl alcohol needed an inertization procedure. The shipping company found Atlas Copco Rental online and within a few days, their completely autonomous, temporary nitrogen installation was up and running.

The web form ended up directly on the desk of Nicola Di Savino, sales area manager at Atlas Copco Rental Italy, who immediately contacted Faster Srl.

The request was to provide a nitrogen installation that could handle 300 Nm³/h of nitrogen at a purity of 98%, to be delivered at the Italian harbor of Trapani.

Waiting on the quay

Atlas Copco Rental worked out a completely autonomous installation with an NGM 1000 nitrogen generator, powered by a QAS 125 generator and a PTS 1600 oil-free compressor in a DNV frame with all matching accessories.

Only a few days after Faster Srl’s very first inquiry, the whole installation was ready for action on the quay at Trapani’s harbor, awaiting the green light from the port authorities to start the inertization project.

Time is money

The authorities sent their approval an hour before midnight that same day, so the chemical tanker moored and the project could start. Both the emptying of the tanks as the inertization process itself went smoothly and the rented installation was kept running continuously for 24 hours.

Fast response and delivery, combined with a smoothly performing installation, ensured the expensive chemical tanker could be emptied and cleaned in a very short time, saving Faster Srl lots of time and money.
