Temporary air solution bridges supply gap during compressor renovation

Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co rents temporary solution

Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co. KG from Karlsruhe contacted Atlas Copco Rental as they needed a temporary compressed air installation. This world leading pharmaceutical manufacturer needed to expand the capacity of its existing compressed air system and, at the same time, carry out renovations and optimizations due to rising production numbers and the associated acquisition of new production facilities. We rented out a temporary air solution to bridge this project.

During the process of exchanging the old compressor and dryer unit for a new, larger one from Atlas Copco, a temporary installation provided the compressed air supply for a period of almost four weeks.

In addition to straightforward control and driving tasks, compressed air is also used for more complex jobs in the production process.

During these activities, the compressed air is in direct or indirect contact with products. Oil-free air is required to deliver the high air quality that these critical applications need. Atlas Copco Rental provided an electrical oil-free compressor (ZT 145, working pressure max. 10 bar, supply capacity max. 20.1 m³/min), in combination with an adsorption dryer (CDE 400 R, pressure dew point -40°C) with integrated continuous pressure dew point measurement and two-stage filtration (DD+/PD+).

Our service technicians installed the two-stage filtration directly on the connection point of the existing compressed air system to prevent any remaining risk of particles entering via the rented connection pipes.

Logistics support from A to Z

We handled the entire logistics process from beginning to end: loading, unloading and installing the pipes, and wiring the rented components. Our service team was also challenged by specific requirements during the commissioning process. Local conditions made the cable placement more difficult: the electrical supply connection in the low-voltage main distribution board was over 120m worth of cable away. To avoid obstructing the delivery trucks, the cables were partially routed on a pipeline bridge using a telescopic lift platform. Furthermore, cable trays, provided by the customer, also guided these cables through wall openings and through the inside of a raised floor.

The faultless handling of the rental process, including the quotation creation, technical clarification, delivery, installation and commissioning, as well as the support while using the rental system, were an important requirement for the successful implementation of the ‘Compressed Air Supply Renovation’ project at Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co. KG.
