9 quick service tips for a winter ready generator

Winter is coming! So, use this maintenance checklist when your power generator faces cold temperatures ahead!

2. Repair any canopy damages to prevent corrosion propagation.

Prevention here is key: first, check the body and the outer parts of the machine to nip any pending corrosion in the bud.

3. Inspect the condition of rubber hoses and flexibles.

With aging, rubbers tend to become brittle, especially in cold temperatures. So, be sure to replace them on time.

4. Replace the cooling fluid before it starts freezing.

As coolants age, they lose protective properties. New coolant will help avoiding the fluid to freeze at cold temperatures.

5. Replace oil.

As temperatures fall, oil becomes thicker, which as a result will lower its lubrication performance. So, to guarantee optimum engine lubrication and performance under cold temperatures, you should replace the oil regularly. Also, make sure the right oil is used for the ambient temperature in your region.

6. Measure alternator insulation resistance.

A low insulation-resistive value can lead to a future breakdown. Therefore, regularly keeping note of the levels is key.

7. Test the earth leakage relay

This important safety device is used in electrical installations to prevent shock. It detects small stray voltages on the metal enclosures and immediately interrupts the circuit if a dangerous voltage is detected.
