Ensuring safe EV battery assembly with insulated tools

The rapid development of EV platforms and the need for lightweighting has resulted in the battery becoming an integrated part of the vehicle structure.  To meet this safety-critical challenge, Atlas Copco supports manufacturers with advanced assembly solutions in every step of EV production, including battery assembly and final vehicle assembly with intelligent joining technologies that are both smart and safe.

March 21, 2024

Ensuring operator safety in the EV battery assembly process is crucial because the cells and modules within the battery are already electrically charged with voltage levels ranging from a few hundred to 1,000 volts DC.  Exposure to voltages higher than 120V DC, as well as the risk of electric arcs or exploding batteries, could result in significant injury or even death.  This demands that risk assessments are carried out and operators are trained in safe working practices for battery assembly, in addition to working with special tools.

Atlas Copco enables manufacturers to take the necessary steps to mitigate risk  for operators in battery assembly through a range of galvanically-insulated components for handheld electric assembly tools. These have been specially designed to provide a safe barrier that prevents current flow into the tool.  Components include fully insulated sockets and quick change adapters, as well as smart-engineered insulated tool covers and Atlas Copco’s unique ‘Slip-Off’ protection.  Featuring ergonomic and lightweight design, the new Atlas Copco insulated components are signal green in colour for easy identification at the workstation.  The insulated components are also tested according to ICE/EN/UL/CSA 62841 and 60745.

With innovative joining technologies and a wealth of expertise in EV assembly, Atlas Copco is your strategic partner for electromobility.
