Expert Live Q&A: Corded Tools

Welcome to the Corded Tools question and answer session.

Answering viewer questions in this session is Brittany Middaugh, our Corded Tool Product Marketing Specialist at Atlas Copco. During this Q&A session, we’re exploring the corded tools offered by Atlas Copco. Brittany begins the Q&A with a brief overview of our corded, also referred to as ‘cable’, tools, the Tensor range. Atlas Copco Tensor tools are electric transducerized handheld tools that provide high-level accuracy and full traceability. There are five groups that make up the Tensor family. The Tensor SL is a low torque tool with a torque capability of 3Nm-20 Nm. The Tensor SR’s capability is 1.5Nm-30Nm. Tensor STR tools have a range of 1Nm-200Nm. The Tensor STs have a wide torque range of 1Nm-4000Nm, and have an extension called the Tensor ST Revo (60Nm-8000Nm), which is a high torque pistol grip.

When asked about the benefits of using a corded tool rather than a battery tool, Brittany explains that the cabled tools are tethered to a station and often offer a higher torque range capability, which is a huge benefit. Later, Brittany is asked about the benefits of cable tools compared to pneumatic tools. She explains that in this case, the biggest benefits are increased accuracy and full traceability. We then learn about the accuracy of Atlas Copco Tensor tools. The Tensor SL, SR, ST and STR are all safety-critical rated, and have an accuracy of +/- 5%. The most accurate tool of the Tensor group is the ETT two-trigger tool in the STR family, with an accuracy of +/-2.5%. Brittany also explains some new developments to the Tensor tool group. There is a new motor on the Tensor STR tool that increases tool life and, when used in conjunction with the Power Focus 6000, provides faster running speeds and advanced tightening strategies.

On the subject of advanced tightening strategies, Brittany explains that the Power Focus 6000 offers TruAngle and TurboTight, which both boost ergonomics, productivity and accuracy during fastenings. A viewer asks a question about configurations available for Tensor tools, and Brittany explains that there are three configuration categories: Standard, specialized and advanced. All three configurations have multiple different tool options. We then go into cleaning recommendations for Tensor tools, which is especially relevant during the Covid-19 crisis. Brittany says that she recommends using an isopropyl alcohol-based solution on a damp rag to wipe down the tools. Never use gloves and do not submerge or spray solutions directly onto tools.

The Q&A wraps up on the subject of connected tightening controllers to be used with the Tensor tools. Our low torque tensor tools like the Tensor SL require the Power Focus 6000LV, the low-voltage option. SR, STR, and ST Tensor tools can be used with the Power Focus 4000 or the Power Focus 6000. The Power Focus 6000 offers one cable tool port and can connect to five battery tools. The Power Focus 4000 has only one tool port. With a connection to the Power Focus 6000, the transducerized Tensor tools constantly monitor data and voltage and provide data results in real-time.
