Success story: Creating a customized automated station for a dental material manufacturer

Many manufacturers are turning to automation for some of their applications. This comes as no surprise considering automated technology in production reduces plant downtime, increases output, improves quality, optimizes headcount and capital equipment utilization, and reduces operator injuries.

So, when one major dental material manufacturer came to Atlas Copco for a fully automated solution, our experts knew just the solution for their assembly needs. Read on to discover more this solution and how we successfully created a custom part to best fit their needs.

The situation

After tooling up a new line for this customer, they came to us with an additional challenge that was identified after that installation. They wanted Industry 4.0 technology in their assembly, and they knew exactly who they were going to call: the experts at Atlas Copco. When they reached out, they explained that they wanted an automated solution that would loosen a screw, confirm that it had been removed, and then use vacuum pressure to drop the screw off in a different location.

The solution

For us, the solution was clear: an Atlas Copco MicroTorque system paired with a smart vacuum pump. The MicroTorque Controller is leading manufacturers into the Industry 4.0 revolution. This innovative tool reduces cycle time while keeping your product quality high. With this solution, our customer can run a reverse program, pick up the screw with the vacuum pump, drop it off, and control all the equipment with I/O.

But this solution wasn’t as cut and dry as it sounds on the surface. While this solution would be fully automated and enable them to remove and relocate the screws as requested, the screws were too large for the vacuum pump nozzle. Instead of accepting this setback, however, we faced the challenge head-on and crafted a custom nozzle that could support the screws.

The resolution

After implementing the MicroTorque system and smart vacuum pumps into their facility, our customer is pleased with the results. They now have a fully automated solution that can remove and relocate the screw in as little as 6.5 seconds! This enables them to benefit from improved productivity and uptime, which is why they plan to incorporate more of these automated stations into their assembly.
