Senior accountant Ashlan Reddy’s take on working smarter together

Senior accountant Ashlan Reddy, fondly known as Ash at Atlas Copco has spent the last six years working at the organisation and, has been loving every second of being part of his work family. When asked to describe the company in three words, Ashlan immediately answers: innovative, global and quality. Ashlan initially qualified as a Financial Accountant in 2012 and went on to study through the ACCA (Association for Chartered Certified Accountants). He commenced his tenure at the company as an accountant in October 2013, and has always been part of the finance team (formerly ‘ACBS’). In September 2019, he was given the title of senior accountant within the team, and has since been exposed to areas from beyond accounting to reporting. Atlas Copco takes its stance to value people as one of its key priorities and, this is what came through quite strongly when Ashlan was asked about the growth potential the organisation provides. “From a finance perspective, understanding each other’s job functions is key, so there is always an exchange of information and an impartation of new skills. This helps us to expand our existing skillsets and aids the efficiency of the team. For example, I was able to delegate the preparation of the IT charges invoicing to my colleague, who quickly got to grips with what was needed and hence, required less assistance from me. This resulted in a dually beneficial experience as, it allowed her to learn how the process worked and, to quickly hone a key skill which would in a ripple effect form, assist the entire team to function optimally and benefit her own growth,” says Ashlan. Undoubtedly, some things in life are just meant to be. Such an example would be the way which Ashlan took on the opportunity to work for Atlas Copco. “I must admit, the job actually found me! Interestingly, I was tasked to find out more about products that are used in the mining sector as part of a research project I had been working on in 2010 and, Atlas Copco happened to be one of those few companies that I researched. I took it as a sign to curiously inquire about working for the company as I started seeing Atlas Copco branded vehicles almost everywhere I went and, even eavesdropped a conversation about the brand during a mining expo I attended in 2011,” he smiles. When asked about career advice for anyone hoping to join the team at Atlas, Ashlan had a few pearls of wisdom to offer: “Atlas Copco’s environment is constantly changing through technological and environmental influences, this is a good thing as it is beneficial two-fold, the first being that it ensures that the company stays relevant and, the second is that it challenges you to strive for better work performance. It is also evident that different job functions more often than not, overlap. An example can be the finance department overlapping into human resources. So, it’s vital to have a curious nature if you would like to work at Atlas. The senior management team ensures that everyone whilst being kept happy at work, are never left feeling comfortable or complacent, you never stop learning and I love this about my job at Atlas. Accept new challenges and look for opportunities be more efficient and to broaden your understanding of other departments and divisions within the organisation – this will help you gain faster momentum.” Ashlan loves music and a good party and untrue to his numerically inclined nature, deejays in his spare time.
