What ways to join parts do you know?
There are different methods for joining parts. We can join parts using screws, adhesives, welding, and another common method—riveting.
Why choose riveting over other joining methods?:
Even though technology is advancing rapidly in the areas of tightening, adhesives, and even self-piercing rivets, in light construction industries and some aerospace programs, solid rivets are still the preferred method for joining parts because:
- Solid rivets are lightweight but still provide strong and durable joints.
- Solid rivets are resistant to fatigue due to their high elasticity, contributing to their longevity.
- Their cost is lower compared to other methods.
The riveting process
There are different types of rivets in various sizes, and each type of rivet serves a distinct application.
When riveting by deformation, a riveting hammer and a bucking bar are used. The riveting hammer delivers impacts on the rivet, while the bucking bar holds the rivet in place to ensure it deforms properly. To effectively deform various types of rivets, the appropriate punch should be used.
There are two ways to rivet by deformation: direct riveting and indirect riveting:
- Direct riveting is when the bucking bar is placed against the head of the solid rivet, and the impacts are applied to the shank.
- Indirect riveting is when the bucking bar is placed against the shank of the solid rivet, and the impacts are applied to the rivet head.
Which of the two methods is better?
Indirect riveting is the most commonly used method because the first impact drives the solid rivet in and ensures that the head of the rivet is flush with the surface of the structure.
What kind of riveting hammer should I use?
To achieve a riveted joint of the optimum strength, it is essential to choose a correctly sized riveting hammer. Additionally, the following factors should be considered:
- Rivet material
- Rivet diameter
- Rigidity of the structure
How do we prepare the hole where the rivet will be placed?
To drill the holes in structures that will be riveted, different types of drills are available, such as straight, pistol-type, angular, or modular drills. Once the hole is made, it may need to be countersunk depending on the type of rivet to be used.
