Significantly increasing efficiency in bolt marking compared to the traditional process on the stationary measuring machine was the objective of Audi's Technical Development department in car body construction approximately six years ago. The laser projection system from EXTEND3D – Part of Atlas Copco made it possible to successfully achieve the goal at the Ingolstadt location. And it also provided advantages in terms of flexibility and ergonomics.
Challenge
Solution
A bolt position is projected onto the component in the correct position by the IPG Precision laser projector. Bolts already inserted can be checked at any time.
Impact & Key results
Audi reduced staffing and processing time by half each, so altogether time was reduced by 75%. Accuracy exceeded expectations. IPG Mobile is now also used in series inspections and at additional sites. Its strength is especially evident in prototype construction: changes can be quickly captured and implemented directly on the component—without delays.
“In the past, we were inflexible with the stationary measuring machine, and we often had to rebuild it so that the marking point aimed in the right direction. The IPG method is quicker and easier, and we have also become better than we expected in terms of accuracy.”
