Closure applications in body shop

Closures are among the most complex vehicle parts due to varying shapes, contours and size tolerances between manufacturers. We at Atlas Copco work together with our customers to ensure optimal solution regardless of the complexity of the project.

Challenges in closure applications:

The production of the closure parts (doors, engine hood, trunk, fenders) is a separate process step within the body in white production line. One of the most demanding joining process in body in white manufacturing is the hem flange process.

Structural bonding:

Bead application

A standard bead is a preferred solution to gain outstanding strength and stiffness with epoxy-based adhesives.

Adhesive between inner and outer sheet not only fulfills a structural function, it also prevents corrosion, which is especially important in the production of all closure parts.

In hem flange bonding In body in white the swirl technology gets more and more attention, due to its ability to offer an excellence material distribution and a more reliable process window.

Especially in closures the handeling of a bead application can become quite difficult when it comes to a complex part geometry. Thats why the swirl technology and its flexibility is becoming more and more popular within the automotive industry.

Bead application

A regular bead application is still the most established application type in hem flange bonding.



Large panels are prone to vibrations and noise during vehicle operation. This is why you need to take necessary measures to ensure stiffness, using elastic (rubber) adhesives.
