Augmented Reality in Body Constructing at AUDI: Intelligent laser projection enables efficient bolt marking

1 minute za branje September 25, 2025

Significantly increasing efficiency in bolt marking compared to the traditional process on the stationary measuring machine was the objective of Audi's Technical Development department in car body construction approximately six years ago. The laser projection system from EXTEND3D – Part of Atlas Copco made it possible to successfully achieve the goal at the Ingolstadt location. And it also provided advantages in terms of flexibility and ergonomics.

Challenge

Manual and high-tech processes and tools are required in vehicle manufacturing

Any number of contours can be transferred by mouse click from the design data to the component.

Manual bolt marking using stationary measuring machines was time-consuming, error-prone, and required multiple staff. In prototype construction, where components and requirements change rapidly, Audi faced limitations. Increasing variant diversity demanded a flexible, fast, and precise solution to maintain consistent quality and efficiency.

Solution

The IPG Mobile is provides real-time coordinate output during assembly of long sedans

A bolt position is projected onto the component in the correct position by the IPG Precision laser projector. Bolts already inserted can be checked at any time.

IPG Mobile projects CAD-based markings directly onto the car body. Movements of the part and projector are compensated in real time. The intuitive software allows quick training and flexible use. Future updates will enable markerless operation, simplifying setup and making projection even more dynamic and user-friendly.

Impact & Key results

Audi reduced staffing and processing time by half each, so altogether time was reduced by 75%. Accuracy exceeded expectations. IPG Mobile is now also used in series inspections and at additional sites. Its strength is especially evident in prototype construction: changes can be quickly captured and implemented directly on the component—without   delays.

“In the past, we were inflexible with the stationary measuring machine, and we often had to rebuild it so that the marking point aimed in the right direction. The IPG method is quicker and easier, and we have also become better than we expected in terms of accuracy.”
