This goal for the project is to investigate, design, build and verify improvements on the current friction test rig (FTR).
When tightening a structural joint the goal is to achieve sufficient clamp force to carry external loads. To control and monitor a tightening process, it is common practice to measure torque or torque plus angle. If the coefficient of friction is constant, the torque is proportional to clamp force. In reality, the coefficient of friction will vary depending on the fastener’s coating and the material it has be tightened against.
The friction test rig is able to separate the torque underhead and in the threads. This will help to increase the understanding how the coefficient of friction will change under different tightening and surface conditions.
Build a working prototype of the attachments, verify its stability and effect on the results from the tightening.
To be successful in this project you have a solid understanding of practical laboratory work, design, analysis and manufacturing of the parts.
