Temporary power supply for High Voltage Direct Current platform DolWin alpha
Zwijndrecht, Netherlands, May 28, 2014: Atlas Copco Rental, through Dutch company Heerema Fabrication Group, successfully provided the “DolWin alpha” transformer platform with temporary power.
The platform weighs 16,000 tons and is 95 meters high. It has a transmission link directed on-shore and is stationed in the North Sea, between Denmark and Germany. After installation, with 800 MW, it will be the largest offshore installation of TenneT - the national electricity transmission system operator of the Netherlands.
Atlas Copco Rental delivered its QAS 325 generator
with a 3000 litters external tank, both in DNV certified containers, during the construction of the platform in Zwijndrecht (NL). It has been operational there for 3 month until the platform was shipped to Schiedam (west of Rotterdam), where the construction was completed. From that moment on, the generator and tank were positioned on top of the platform. Atlas Copco Rental performed there the last service to ensure it could go offshore
in good condition.
A few month later the platform was ready and shipped to its ultimate location in the North Sea. The platform has been installed by one of the largest crane ships in the world, “the Thialf”, property of Heerema Marine Contractors. The Atlas Copco Rental QAS 325 generator and tank remained at the “DolWin alpha” until the beginning of 2014.
TenneT already has 2 HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) platforms in the North Sea. Besides the DolWin alpha, the network administrator wants to construct another nine installations during the next five years, providing Atlas Copco Rental with new opportunities to extend their services.
