From University to the Working World: Business Intelligence

Matt Shelley, Business Intelligence Year in Industry Student

 

When I first started my placement, I had no clue what I was going to be in for. Being my first professional job, working with systems I had not touched before, I felt like I was going to be out of my depth. 6 months in, thanks to the support of my team, I’m really starting to feel like what I’m doing is having some impact on the operations of the company. In business intelligence, we mostly focus on the reporting of the operations side of the business, as well as looking after some of our systems used by our engineers. We also put into place processes that aim to increase operational efficiency and decrease costs, which can affect all areas of the business.

What was the recruitment process with Atlas Copco like?

The recruitment process was fairly painless compared to some of the other placement years that I had applied for. I applied for the role around March, and then heard back for an online group session around the end of April. This session was mostly to let us know more about the company, as well as the area it’s based in, which was really useful to know more about where we would be spending the year if successful. Shortly after I received a call asking me in for an individual interview, with a couple of tasks to complete ready for it. I then heard back from the interview later that afternoon.

What does your role involve?

My role mostly involves looking after the company’s SharePoint site, though I am now picking up some of the reporting my team does also. SharePoint is a Microsoft Intranet system, that involves a lot of different useful tools, from file sharing, shared calendars, and even some process automation through basic data basing. This mostly involves me working in all aspects of the Office365 suite, developing systems that help to track processes and make things simpler for other departments. I’m also currently working on quite a large project, moving all of the company’s files from our shared server onto SharePoint. It’s in these projects that it feels like my role has a big impact, and I definitely enjoy the problem-solving aspect of how best these processes can work.

What are you most excited about in your Business Intelligence role?

I’m mostly looking forward to getting to work in more new systems as we get access to them. We recently got access to a part of Office365 that allows us to create complete apps that are very simple to use, but can be really effective in helping us to make systems easier to use.
