FAQ's

What is VDI/VDE 2645, Part 2?

VDI/VDE code of practice 2645, Part 2:2014 was drawn up to meet the key requirement of quality management that production processes are to be carried out under controlled conditions. The code of practice describes the performance of machine capability tests for regular testing in production and series production and is therefore unique. The standard is based on the assumption that industrial production processes are subject to a variety of different effects. These parameters are often referred to in German as the five “Ms”, for the German words denoting human, machine, method, material and environment (ambient effects). A machine capability test verifies the stability and reproducibility of the factor “machine”, allowing an assessment of process errors to be expected as a result of machine effects. In turn, this provides a benchmark for comparing the quality of different machines. The code of practice describes the statistical evaluation of the measured values of tightening tools in the form of a machine capability test. The purpose of the machine capability test is to ensure that only tightening tools which are fit for the purpose are used.

Can Atlas Copco also carry out tests at customers’ facilities?

Yes, the Atlas Copco test laboratory is accredited both as a stationary laboratory and for tests carried out on site at customers’ facilities.

What tools can be tested by Atlas Copco in accordance with VDI/VDE 2645-2?

Atlas Copco is accredited for procedures M201 to M208 in accordance with VDI/VDE 2645-2. On this basis, we can test power tools with continuous rotation in the torque range between 1 N•m (Newton-meter) and 1000 N•m. Work is in progress on extending the measuring range and including other procedures.

Does VDI/VDE 2862-2 require testing in accordance with VDI/VDE 2645-2 for general industry sectors?

Yes, Section 3.5.1.1 “Minimum Technical Requirements” states that tightening systems must be regularly tested, e.g. in accordance with VDI/VDE 2645-2 (applicable standard). The guideline VDI/VDE 2862-2 states requirements for the use of fastening systems and tools by companies outside the automotive industry. The guideline provides a basis for the classification of threaded joints as well as guidelines for the selection of appropriate tools to ensure safe tightening in production.

How often should tests in accordance with VDI/VDE 2645-2 be carried out?

As production must be carried out under controlled conditions in all situations, Atlas Copco recommends that tests should be conducted at intervals of one year and after all maintenance work.

As a customer, can I also carry out machine capability tests myself?

Yes, this is certainly possible. However, a large number of conditions must be met. These conditions are based on DIN EN ISO 17025 and customers should ensure full compliance with this standard in their own tests.

What is the significance of VDI/VDE 2645-2 for tools used in production in the automotive industry (IATF 16949)?

IATF 16949 (International Automotive Task Force) for the automotive industry was drawn up on the basis of ISO 9001 in order to standardize the general requirements for quality management systems Section 7.1.5.3.2 of the current standard IATF 16949:2016 states that “The laboratory shall be accredited… and include the relevant inspection, test, or calibration service in the scope of the accreditation (certificate); the certificate of calibration or test report shall include the mark of a national accreditation body.” This wording does not allow any leeway for manufacturer’s or ISO calibration or non-accredited tool testing if the requirements of IATF 16949 are to be met and compliance is to be proved for example in connection with a customer audit. VDI/VDE code of practice 2645, Part 2:2014 was drawn up to meet the key requirement of quality management that production processes are to be carried out under controlled conditions. The code of practice describes the performance of machine capability tests for regular testing in production and series production and is therefore unique. On this basis, in accordance with VDI/VDE 2645, Part 2:2014-09, DAkkS -accredited tests must be carried out on tools used in production.
