Industrial Projection Guidance

Innovation driver in dynamic video and laser projection

Dynamic video and laser projection show their strengths in various industrial areas – especially where manual processes are necessary. Particularly in complex situations, such as short cycle times, a high number of assembly steps or a large number of variants, our Industrial Projection Guidance (IPG) can greatly simplify manual work.

 

Challenges in Production and Quality Assurance

While many steps in production are already highly automated, there will still be activities in assembly  and quality assurance that require manual rework. Due to the increasing variety of variants, they are also becoming more and more complex. Employees have to quickly switch back and forth between different product lines - a mistake can easily happen. For each model you need a separate positioning or testing template. In addition to the exact positioning of elements, it is often crucial to simply locate features quickly and safely. The high number of variants makes it difficult to follow the correct order without forgetting individual steps. Custom-made templates are expensive in the long run, because not only their procurement often represents a significant investment - storage and maintenance also cause additional costs. The more product series and variants you have in your portfolio, the more templates you need and the more expensive it gets.

 

Our Solution: Industrial Projection Guidance

Projection Guidance Solutions from Atlas Copco aim to provide optimal support for production, assembly, quality assurance and rework. Our dynamic laser- and video projection make it possible to replace traditional templates with digital ones. The solutions lead to higher productivity thanks to intuitive worker guidance. The system is easy to set up, and quickly ready for use. The integrated OPC-UA interface is part of all products and enables integration into plants and synchronization with conveyor technology. Projection contents are then displayed fully automatically as soon as a component is conveyed into the relevant area.

What is Laser Projection in Production?

Digitalization and the Internet of Things (IoT) are in the process of changing production. The digital factory enables a greater variety of variants with shorter product cycles at the same time. Networking and digital systems support people in carrying out manual work precisely and reliably, for example in assembly or quality assurance. Thanks to the visualization of 3D information by using laser projection, there are numerous advantages in complex manufacturing.

What is Dynamic Video Projection?

Video projection is used in a wide range of industrial sectors wherever complex 3D information needs to be visualized on components. Using a calibrated video projector or beamer, production or CAD data from the production system is projected precisely onto moving components and, depending on the work step, displayed to the worker as an animated step-by-step sequence or simultaneously across the work process. In this way, manual work that still has to be carried out, for example in assembly or quality assurance, can be done faster, more precisely, and more reliably.

Why Video- and Laser Projection?

Video- and laser solutions aim to provide optimal support for production, assembly, quality assurance and rework. The solutions lead to higher productivity thanks to intuitive worker guidance. Laser projection offers particular flexibility: The components can be moved or repositioned in the work process and the projection system adapts seamlessly to the new conditions thanks to dynamic referencing.

Dynamic Referencing

Dynamic referencing enables precise projection even during motion. Calibrated camera(s) track the 3D position and orientation of the projector(s) with respect to parts and assemblies in real time. Smart algorithms adjust the laser or video projection continuously, ensuring alignment with the moving object. Marker-based tracking uses coded or uncoded targets for high accuracy and compliance with CAD tolerances or metrology. Markerless tracking relies on geometric features and is optimized for fast, repetitive cycles in automated environments.

Calibration for Precise Projection

To enable dynamic referencing, the projection system must be calibrated. We offer three methods: factory calibration in our certified lab, manual recalibration via Accuracy Assessment Kit, or automated self-calibration in integrated setups. These ensure long-term process reliability. Our IPG systems are robust, designed for daily industrial use, and especially suited for mobile or dynamic applications. Calibration maintains accuracy even under changing environmental conditions and frequent repositioning.

Optimal Visualization thanks to Video Projection

Our IPG Video projection systems ensure direct transfer of the data “into practice” – onto the component in question: sandwich panels, the engine hood, the ship’s hull, or the prototype. Compared to lasers, this projection is absolutely flicker-free and as much content as required can be displayed. In addition, different colors are available for the image. For example, it can display measurement results on the workpiece in the form of false color and deviation maps or individual point measurement values. Laser projection for highest precision and contrast - even on difficult surfaces

The family of dynamic IPG laser projectors offers maximum precision in the manufacturing process. IPG projectors can be applied on surfaces with a complex or curved shape and even if the material is dark and highly shiny, in other words uncooperative for other solutions based on video projection. IPG laser projection is particularly suited for precise digital templating applications and to guide operators through complex assembly or rework processes.
