Sealing
Durable sealing and bonding applications for long-term component protection
Sealing is a key process used to protect everything from the smallest electronic components – such as sensors and control units – to large vehicle structures like doors, body panels, chassis joints, and battery trays. High-performance sealants provide a protective barrier against moisture, dust, and chemicals, while also supporting bonding and enhancing structural integrity.
Application of high-viscosity sealants
During sealing, high-viscosity sealant is precisely applied in bead form to the workpiece. It acts as a barrier against external influences while also serving as a bonding agent when using special adhesive materials.
Whether used as FIPG ("formed in-place gasket") or CIPG procedure ("cured in-place gasket"), they safeguard sensitive electronics from dust, moisture, corrosive media or temperature-related influences and enhance product durability.
What are liquid seals used for?
Liquid seals are widely used in lighting, electronics, and e-mobility, especially in automotive applications like sealing enclosures, engines, and sensors.
Beyond protection, they increasingly offer bonding functions. Their flexible application, material adaptability, and elimination of solid seal storage and installation make them a cost-effective solution. Advanced formulations also boost performance, offering greater resistance to temperature, fuels, and lubricants.
In addition to functional sealing, many applications require visually precise and uniform sealant applications – especially in design-sensitive areas such as automotive interiors or consumer electronics. This process, known as cosmetic sealing, ensures not only protection but also a clean, high-quality appearance. Atlas Copco’s product lines SCA & Scheugenpflug offer various sealing solutions for cosmetic purposes in the automotive paint shop or consumer electronics.
Cosmetic sealing demands exact dosing and consistent bead geometry, often supported by automated dispensing systems and integrated vision solutions. This ensures both functional performance and a visually appealing finish. Cosmetic beads are applied with visual precision to enhance both functionality and aesthetics. They are typically used in design-sensitive areas such as interior trims, roof ditches, rear lamps, visible joints or consumer electronics.
Commonly used application technologies for cosmetic sealing:
- Various streaming applications (flat stream & jet stream)
- Extrusion (for trim edges)
- Dynamic drop applications
Interior seam sealing is a key process in automotive manufacturing, designed to protect hidden joints and seams from moisture, dust, and chemical exposure. These sealants form a durable barrier that enhances long-term reliability. Atlas Copco’s product line SCA offers automated sealing solutions for these challenges in the automotive paint shop.
Beyond protection, interior seam sealing contributes to a quieter and more comfortable driving experience by damping vibrations and minimizing noise inside the cabin. Though concealed beneath trim panels or carpets, these seals play a vital role in vehicle performance and passenger comfort.
Interior sealants are commonly used in areas such as floor panels, roof structures, door frames, and pillar joints, where functional sealing is essential but not visible to the end user.
Commonly used application technologies for automated interior seam sealing:
- Streaming applications
- Swirl pattern applications
- Dynamic drop applications
