When to choose Foodgrade compressor oil?

When you are manufacturing or packaging products in the food, beverage or pharmaceutical industry, it is essential that you are aware about potential health risks if compressed air would accidentally get in touch with your product.

Food, beverage & pharmaceutical industries

If compressed air is used in the production process and gets in contact with the product it is absolutely mandatory to use 100% Oil Free air (Class 0). In many applications the compressed air is not in direct contact with the product and as such oil injected air can be used. As the compressed air might get accidentally in contact with the product, a compressor oil that complies with safe food regulations and is NSF registered is the correct choice.

Roto Synthetic Foodgrade

Foodgrade approved lubricants are designed to protect and enhance your key assets in the same way that the other Atlas Copco genuine lubricants do  against wear, corrosion, oxidation, and friction, as well as transferring and dissipating heat in the most efficient way. The only sure way to eliminate the risk of contamination in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments is to use NSF certified H1 lubricants whenever possible.

Food safety standards for lubricants

NSF lubricant classification

There are several types of lubricants approved for use in the food industry. While all  may be found in food processing environments, only one classification is permitted to come into direct contact with food.

  • NSF H1 Lubricants: True food-grade lubricants approved for incidental contact with food. These lubricants ensure the product remains safe from contamination.
  • NSF H2 Lubricants: Designed for use on equipment where there is no possibility of contact with food or beverages. Most industrial-grade lubricants fall into this category.
  • NSF H3 Lubricants: Water-soluble lubricants used on machine parts that must be cleaned before coming into contact with food. Commonly applied for cleaning purposes and rust prevention.
  • NSF 3H: Approved for use as a direct food contact release agent on surfaces such as grills, ovens, cookware, boning areas, and cutting boards. Helps prevent food from sticking during the processing of red meat, poultry, and related products.
  • NSF HT1: Approved for use as a heat transfer fluid in systems where incidental food contact is possible.

The Atlas Copco Foodgrade lubricants are H1 approved by NSF International. In food and beverage processing facilities, using NSF H1 registered lubricants is essential for preventing potential contamination. Exposure to hazardous substances in these environments can pose serious risks to public health. By choosing a high-quality H1 Atlas Copco food grade lubricant, you protect product integrity, reduce the risk of contamination throughout your production and logistics chain, and ensure optimal equipment performance and longevity across its entire lifecycle. The Atlas Copco Foodgrade oils are Halal and Kosher certified.

Which foodgrade oil to select for your machine?

Roto Synthetic Foodgrade is a 4.000 hours (or 1 year) oil which is a good fit for compressors running in mild and standard operating conditions. In more demanding conditions, the lifetime of Roto Synthetic Foodgrade is 2.000 hours (or 1 year).

Roto Synthetic Foodgrade Ultra, on the other hand, is a perfect fit for compressors running in more demanding or extreme conditions. A lifetime of 4000 hours or 2 years can be guaranteed in demanding conditions. For more extreme operating conditions, the lifetime will reduce to 3.000 hours. This lubricant should also be selected for units with non-standard operating conditions, like frequent start-stops or compressor rooms with bad ventilation.

Frequently asked questions

What does food grade mean ?

Food grade describes materials or substances that are safe for contact with food during processing, preparation, or packaging. They meet strict hygiene and safety standards to prevent contamination and ensure consumer health

How is food grade compressor oil different from regular compressor oil?

Unlike standard compressor oils, food grade compressor oils are formulated with non-toxic, FDA-compliant ingredients and contain no harmful additives. They are certified to meet NSF H1 standards, ensuring safety in cases of incidental food contact.

Is food grade compressor oil suitable for all types of compressors?

Food grade compressor oil is compatible with most types of air compressors used in food and beverage facilities. In case of doubt always contact an expert.

Does food grade compressor oil require more frequent changes?

Not necessarily. High-quality food grade oils are engineered for durability and performance, often offering similar or even extended service intervals compared to conventional oils, depending on operating conditions.
