Air compressor service advice by aftermarket sales engineer James Scully

James Scully is an Aftermarket Sales Engineer for Compressor Technique Service (CTS) Division at Atlas Copco Ireland. James has been with Atlas Copco for over five years and recently finished in the Global Top 100 of the latest CTS Sales Campaign for the second time running.

He started a job with Atlas Copco in 2014 in the Construction and Mining division in Portlaoise, before getting a job in Compressor Technique in Dublin. He spent a year and a half as field-based service engineer on the tools, before being asked to go forward as a Sales Responsible. In August, he will be three years in that role.

James recently finished in the Top 100 of the Compressor Techniques Service Sales Campaign - twice in a row! Does he feel Atlas Copco offer a good support system and atmosphere for its employees to achieve these impressive results? "The role is a lot about getting new business and supporting new and existing customers to keep their compressed air system running at its most reliable and this in the most efficient way. It requires a lot of work, obviously, but there is plenty of support here at Atlas Copco. There are many internal support channels to get to the right person: online, over the phone or in person. The engineers, other sales colleagues and managers – it’s a tight team that works well together!"

What would be some advice he would give to a company using an air compressor with respect to when it should be serviced?

It is good for a customer to be doing their own checks and keeping an eye on their air compressor room as much as possible. Keeping a log of air compressor temperature is also helpful. It is advisable to have your compressor serviced coming into the summer months to make sure the unit is in good condition and ready for the temperature increases. Air flow through coolers and across motors and VSD drives is so important. Proper and correct servicing will cover all these issues. We offer a tier of service products, bespoke to every customer’s needs. We can offer Fixed Price maintenances or tailor-made Service Plans, such as Preventive Maintenance and Total Responsibility agreements. It is best to set up a Service Plan with Atlas Copco where a customer can have their equipment serviced and maintained by our trained engineers. There is something to suit everyone!

A Preventive Maintenance plan would allow Atlas Copco to take care of all the required servicing work of the equipment on a planned basis. Our prime product however, a step up from the above, is the Total Responsibility plan. Here, we equally take care of all the servicing needs, but it also includes cover for any unexpected breakdowns that would occur during the time of the agreement. With either of both Service Plans, we also offer and recommend to draw up a strategy to include the Overhaul of the equipment. The overhaul is a big job where we replace all major components and give the machine a new lease of life. The best value solution, on the long-term, is surely the Total Responsibility plan with Overhaul. You pay for an all-inclusive service and cover of your quality equipment – well spread over the time of the Plan. Obviously, we can endlessly customize each Service Plan to any particular customer needs.
