Work Experience with Atlas Copco HR team

Sophie from Ashlyns School joined us for a week

Meet Sophie! Sophie is a year 12 student undertaking business, economics, and mathematics at A-levels at Ashlyns Secondary School in Berkhamsted. We first met Sophie when she took part in the Dacorum Dragons Den Apprenticeship program and were impressed with her confidence and organisational skills. So, when she reached out to ask us if she could do her work experience with us, we jumped at the opportunity to work with her again.

Sophie spent the week with Jo Heary and the rest of the UK Holdings HR team. It was a jam-packed week with time spent in the office meeting our employees and time out of the office at Hemel Hempstead School and the BeaconMedaes site. Read Sophie’s mini diary to find out more about her week and her experience at Atlas Copco.

My week with Atlas Copco UK

Throughout this week at Atlas Copco, I have been able to gain insights into how the business works. It has been very interesting as I haven’t just had a desk job. I have had a range of tasks from looking at documents to meeting year in industry students in Chesterfield.

During my time here, I was fortunate enough to be presented with the opportunity to talk to people within different departments at the Hemel Hempstead headquarters. I spoke to people from across the different Business Areas working in various roles to find out more about them and what they do.

On Tuesday, I went to the Hemel Hempstead School to sit in on the mock interviews that Atlas Copco was part of. This enabled me to understand what companies are looking for in interviews, which will be invaluable to me going forward.

Year in Industry Group photo

On Thursday, I had the chance to meet the University students who chose to do their year in industry placement at Atlas Copco. The students did presentations showing their accomplishments and discussed how they grew on a professional and personal level during their time in the role. I was also able to ask them about the advantages and disadvantages of their year in industry placement, which gave me true insights into what it would entail. It also highlighted the importance of taking a 4-year university course.

Not only did I benefit from meeting the year in industry students, but I was also able to learn more about Atlas Copco as we toured the BeaconMedaes facilities. I was shown the office environment and the goods that they manufacture.

Overall, this experience has been an amazing opportunity as I have been able to understand how Atlas Copco operates, what their true business objectives are, that they pride themselves on sustainability and inclusiveness, as well as many other outstanding goals.

It was with pleasure that we welcomed Sophie to undertake a week of work experience with our HR Team after meeting her during the Dragons Apprentice program. It was an opportunity for us to showcase our organisation and show Sophie how diverse and dynamic Atlas Copco can be as a place to work. It is great to get involved with students as we also learn from them and to see Sophie show the same diligence and enthusiasm we had seen in her, now in a working environment.
