How a Nitrogen generator can save the entire production

How much does a one-hour production shortage cost companies?

When manufacturing plants have constant production, a one-hour interruption can cause big losses. How can these companies avoid the risk of losing resources, money, and time?

The Challenge

In 2020, the pandemic arrived without any warning, and everything as we know it today changed. It affected not only our lives but the way various products were made.

Many raw materials were in short supply or delayed, causing many companies to reduce their production capacity or even stop a large part of their operations.

The foregoing taught many companies to take precautions to reduce risks and have greater control over the factors that could affect their operations.

A company dedicated to manufacturing polycarbonate lenses began to experience delays in the delivery of the nitrogen necessary for its day-to-day operations prompting them to take preventative measures in case of further setbacks.

The Journey

The client generally received the liquid nitrogen by trucks; however, their supplier had problems meeting the delivery on time due to various factors.

This alerted the company to begin seeking alternative solutions to prevent possible interruptions to its production, knowing that an hour without operation could have a high cost, not only in profits but also in human resources.

That is what led them to their Area Sales Manager Stephen Gozur to assist in finding a way to have a continuous backup supply of nitrogen at the right purity, pressure, and quantity.

One of the first steps was identifying the purity that the process really required. Based on Stephen's experience on previous projects, the client determined that the purity required was lower than what they were receiving.

Although the current purity of nitrogen the customer was consuming was 99.99%, it was determined that the process only required 99.5%, which helped select a smaller, more affordable, lower energy consumption compressed air solution.

The Total Solution

This compact solution consisted of a model ZT 75 (75 kW) oil-free electric compressor, a regenerative dryer, and an NGM7+ nitrogen generation membrane.

Although the low ambient temperature was outside of the ideal operating conditions for the equipment, a heated tent was the simple solution for the customer to have a complete nitrogen generation system at their disposal.

This simple solution helped our customer focus on their production without worrying about the risk of downtime due to a nitrogen supply delay.

Just as this polycarbonate lens factory took action and created a backup plan, many companies began to include a way to minimize risks in their annual strategy, helped by Atlas Copco Rental.
