Atlas Copco Consulting – Project management

Project management

What is important in project management work for the implementation of industrial assembly processes?

Phase 1: Concept phase

Projektmanagement Konzeptphase

The project starts with the concept phase. Following the kick-off meeting, possible approaches for solutions are developed and documented in accordance with the conditions that apply. The concepts prepared may range from the process optimization of a single station via multiple-spindle units and complex tightening systems through to equipment for an entire production line. Together with all the departments concerned, the concepts are assessed and optimized until they have been approved by the client. The objective of the concept phase is to generate an agreed specification and to submit enquiries to possible suppliers.

Phase 2: Scheduling and resource planning

Projektmanagement Termin- und Ressourcenplanung

The second phase of the project is project planning, which is essential for successful implementation. In this phase, time schedules and resource plans are prepared. Initially, the main focus is on determining the scope of work and making time and cost estimates. On this basis, project milestones are defined and an agreed time schedule is prepared. The resources available are deployed via a project structure plan. At this stage, the roles and responsibilities of teams and employees need to be defined. Meaningful KPI’s and targets are agreed with the client so that project progress can be presented transparently in regular reports.

Phase 3: Implementation

Projektmanagement Umsetzungsphase

Implementation is the key stage in the project. The concepts that have been developed are implemented in line with the time schedule using the resources that have been planned. This calls for regular monitoring of the budget available, processing of milestones, supervision of the plant resources and assessment of any risks. Regular discussions with all the disciplines and departments concerned ensure smooth and trouble-free information flow and allow appropriate measures to be taken in good time in the case of any challenges. The defined KPI’s are presented to the client in regular reports. At the end of this stage, the completed project is available. The client can now inspect the newly designed workplace, the optimized production plant or the finished production line.

Phase 4: Handing-over and optimization

In the fourth phase, the project is handed over to the operator and preparations are made for project completion. The client’s personnel and the maintenance team are trained with the new equipment. The concept that has been implemented can now be used for series production. Where new technologies have been used, a technical acceptance procedure is carried out at this stage. This step ensures the safe operation of the plant. Within the framework of support for start of production, functions and processes are checked in normal operation and any measures which may be needed to optimize the system are identified. These measures are scheduled and included in the change management system. Regular discussions on progress are held with the client. All the relevant documents are finalized for project completion.

Phase 5: Project completion

Projektmanagement Projektabschluss

The project completion stage is reached following handing over and optimization. All the work still to be completed from previous phases is now processed and completed. The project documentation is handed over to the client. In the case of new plants in Germany, acceptance in accordance with the German Civil Code is completed. Together with the client, a project review is carried out, completing the project life cycle.
