What is nitrogen gas generator?

A nitrogen generator supplies instrument gas in the most efficient way as it is used to produce nitrogen on site and as required by the applications, which means the supply in unlimited and on demand with a consistent high purity of gas, resulting in a most cost-effective solution. There are two kinds of nitrogen generators: PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) generator and a membrane nitrogen generator. What are the benefits of on-site nitrogen generation compared to nitrogen cylinder?

  • Increased reliability: nitrogen cylinders are supplied in variety of volumes and pressures. The stated cylinder content is not the actual usable gas volume. Furthermore, relying on nitrogen deliveries isn’t ideal. Production is halted until it arrives. On-site nitrogen generators allow you to produce nitrogen on-demand at any time you need it. 
  • Less operation cost: the up-front cost of buying the nitrogen generator is typically returned in a few years, and after that the cost of nitrogen gas is virtually eliminated because there are no recurring charges. Comparatively, nitrogen cylinders are charged not only for usage of gas but also rental and transportation of the cylinders that can really add up over the operation cost in a year. 
  • No safety hazard: on-site nitrogen generator eliminates delivery trucks coming and going from the facility and risk of handling high pressure heavy cylinders while loading and unloading into position. 
  • Avoid gas wastage: nitrogen cylinders are normally returned to gas company with unused around 10% gas in cylinders. That is because the remaining 10% gas in the cylinder could be contaminated with water vapor or organic impurities which build over time would cause damage to the pipework and regulators. What applications are nitrogen gas commonly used in?

Food packaging

Nitrogen is used to displace the oxygen in food packaging (like snack packages), ensuring that the food is kept fresh and doesn’t age or decay. This prolongs the lifetime of the food and ensures that it’s crisp when you open it!
