Why Vacuum Pumps are used in industrial applications
When an industrial application requires a clean environment or pressure below atmospheric levels, a steady supply of vacuum is used.
At Atlas Copco, our business is propelled by the drive to make processes run more effectively by understanding the needs of the industries we serve. Whatever the application, we provide the vacuum solution.
Vacuum Pumps are applied to a whole range of industrial processes. Here’s a list of a few of them:
- Food processing and food packaging
- Chicken evisceration in poultry
- Drying applications (vacuum drying)
- Glass bottle
- Canning (can productions)
- Paper & printing
- Preserving & packing
- Thermoforming & vacuum forming
- Plastic degassing & extruder degassing
- Automotive parts handling
- Medical applications
- Material conveying like powders & plastic granules
- Woodworking, CNC routing
- Brick & clay manufacture
- Filtrations
- Pressing & lamination
- Distillation
- Vapor recovery
- Condenser vacuum applications
As the leading innovator in the industrial vacuum market, we have continued focus on energy efficiency that translates into savings for our customers. Our products are the starting point to providing a total vacuum solution for dedicated point-of-use machines and central vacuum systems.
Types of Vacuum Pumps
There are a wide variety of Vacuum Pumps on the market. For the longest time Oil-sealed pumps have been the go-to-choice for industries. However as Dry Vacuum Pumps have entered the market there is something to be said for the differences in performance and maintenance costs.
Oil-sealed pumps
Oil-sealed pumps (Rotary Vane and Rotary Screw ) are reliable and durable when a proper maintenance routine is kept. The design is simple, and maintenance can be done in-house by one of your qualified staff. These pumps perform well from atmosphere to base pressures and adapt well to booster pumps for increased capacity and range.
Dry pumps
Dry (Dry Claw, Dry Scroll or Dry Screw) pumps are used when it is of critical importance to avoid contaminating the product or material with substances like oil or water. The design of the pump is such that any lubrication within the system is kept away from contacting the product or material. Maintenance and overhauls tend to require specialist tools and knowledge.

What You Should Know About Energy Efficiency in Vacuum Pumps
There are 3 metrics worth noting when you’re evaluating the energy efficiency of vacuum pumps. They are:
- Ultimate vacuum: the lowest pressure a vacuum pump can achieve. The lower the pressure the higher the vacuum effect.
- Suction capacity: the amount of air that a vacuum pump can discharge from a closed area over a period of time. You could also consider this the time it takes to reach the ultimate vacuum pressure.
- Power rating: the amount of power required to drive the electric motors and mechanical parts that create the vacuum.
The Vacuum Pump’s power rating is only one factor that influences overall efficiency. When the Vacuum Pump is applied to industrial processes the actual power consumption does not always equate the power requirement rating.
Apart from power rating, ultimate pressure and suction capacity, the operating principle and lubrication must be considered. The placement of the machines, the duty cycles, and overall compatibility of the Vacuum Pump with the intended application will also have an impact on energy efficiency.
We often notice that plant owners and engineers try to go for the Vacuum Pump option with the lower power requirement, thinking that it is more energy efficient. This is a mistake.
The only way they could know for sure is to use the pump in their processes, take readings and then compare. This should be done by specialists or consultants from the Vacuum Pump manufacturer itself.
