Keep it Cool This Summer

With an Atlas Copco Air Dryer

Are you ready for the Summer heat?

The rise in temperatures during the summer months can put an extra strain on your compressed air system. Additional pressure can be put on your system due to hotter ambient temperature which can dramatically affect operation efficiencies.

Are you and your compressed air system ready for summer? Our compressed air dryers are ready to help beat the heat!

Why is my compressor leaking water?

The warmer months are upon us, and similar to us, compressed air systems can also sweat. If an air compressor get too hot, the efficiency and performance of the machine is impacted and if unchecked could lead to a breakdown. An air dryer helps to eliminate condensation in your compressed air system from the warm humidity. This prevents damage to the equipment.

However, it is important to ensure the dryer is functioning as the hotter months come rolling in. Regular servicing, especially before the hotter months, is an important part of making sure your compressed air dryer is working efficient and reliably. Get your compressed air system ready for those hot summer days!

Your Air Dryer Questions Answered!

Why does compressed air need to be dried?

Water vapour can always be found in the atmospheric air drawn into a compressor. Temperature is a major factor into the amount of water vapour the air can carry. As temperatures begin to rise, there is also an increase in the air's ability to hold moisture. The capacity is then reduced when the air is then cooled and which causes the water vapour to condense.

Although there are efforts to remove the condensate from the compressor, condensate can still accumulate. This can result in production downtime and costly service, which are unavoidable without sufficient air drying.

How important are dryers to the overall efficiency of the system?

Air dryers can play a huge role in the efficiency of a compressed air system. An air dryer which is not optimised for efficiency could add another 10% to your overall energy bill, whereas an efficient compressed air dryer should contribute only about 2% at most. The drying technology and size you select should complement your compressed air flow and air quality requirements.

How to select the right air dryer?

A basic requirement of an air dryer is to keep up with the air production of the compressor to meet the respective process requirements. Calculation tools are available for users to figure out which air dryer is the most appropriate for their system. These tools help to ensure the sizing of the machine is properly done. Simply guessing the dryer size, or replacing an old dryer with a smaller sized dryer, may not always lead to the desired outcome.

To determine which dryer is the best fit, there are six major points to be calculated and taken into account:

  1. Maximum air flow rate in m³/min
  2. Desired pressure dew point
  3. Air inlet pressure
  4. Air inlet temperature
  5. Ambient air temperature (and water temperature if the condenser is water-cooler)
  6. The installation environment of the dryer

Does the location play a part?

Absolutely! The performance of the dryer could be impacted due to the location of your compressed air system. The cooler the air that enters the compressor, the lower dryer inlet temperature will be. Installing the dryer in a cooler location may impact its effectiveness.

How has dryer technology evolved over the past five years?

Todays dryers allow for more efficient available space and additional flexibilility when installating dryers, as the dryers are getting smaller. In addition, new controllers offer better management capabilities. The advanced connectivity options allow for dryer control, remote monitoring and service.
