Vacuum pumps for advanced batteries manufacturing

Solutions that ensure productivity and power

Electric cars, smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, laptops, gaming consoles – at the heart of nearly every essential modern device is a power battery that keeps it going. Lithium-ion batteries have become a cornerstone of new-age technology, thanks to their high energy density, lightweight nature, and long lifespan. The manufacturing process of these batteries is intricate and involves several critical stages, each requiring precision and control to ensure the final product's quality and performance. One of the key technologies that play a vital role in this process is the use of vacuum.

How are lithium-ion batteries made?

The production of lithium-ion batteries can be broadly divided into three main stages. Here is a quick look at them.

  1. Electrode Manufacturing: This initial stage involves creating the electrodes, which are crucial for the battery's performance. The process starts with mixing active materials like lithium metal oxides with conductive binders and solvents to form a slurry. This slurry is then coated onto current collectors and dried. The drying process is critical as it removes solvents and ensures the electrodes have the right physical properties.

  2. Cell Assembly: In this stage, the electrodes are assembled into cells. This involves layering the electrodes with a separator, connecting them to terminals, and inserting them into a cell housing. The assembly process must be precise to maintain the structural integrity of the battery.

  3. Cell Finishing: The final stage includes the formation process, aging, and end-of-line testing. This ensures that the batteries meet the required performance standards before they are assembled into battery packs.

How do vacuum pumps support the process?

Vacuum pumps are essential at various stages of lithium-ion battery manufacturing. Their main function is to create a controlled environment by removing air and other gases, which impacts the quality and performance of the batteries in the long run.

Mixing

During the electrode manufacturing stage, vacuum pumps are used to mix the slurry of anode and cathode materials. This process helps in removing air bubbles that can form during mixing, ensuring a homogeneous and consistent paste. A uniform mixture is crucial for the battery's performance and longevity.

Drying

Vacuum pumps are also used in the drying process to remove solvents and moisture from the electrodes. This step is vital to achieve high-quality electrodes that can perform reliably under various conditions. Depending on your production set-up, we can provide solutions that can allow you to vacuum dry in batches or in a continuous process.

Filling and Degassing

In the cell assembly stage, vacuum pumps are used to fill the cells with electrolytes and remove any trapped gases. This ensures that the lithium-ions can move freely, which is essential for efficient charging and discharging of the battery. Degassing under vacuum also helps in maintaining the purity of the electrolytes.

Sealing

The final sealing of the battery cells is done under vacuum to remove any remaining air and moisture. This step is crucial to prevent any impurities from affecting the battery's performance and to ensure a long lifespan.
