What is a battery energy storage system?

Battery energy storage systems are transforming the power supply sector by becoming the heart of energy efficient solutions. They are used in off-grid applications or to boost the limited grid available by efficiently storing and delivering energy to match the load demand.

 

Weather it is as a standalone solution, in hybrid mode —with the grid, renewable energies or power generators— or as the central piece of a microgrid, energy storage systems help operators to increase their overall operational productivity, by optimizing energy consumption and cutting costs. How does a battery energy storage system work?

In a Li-ion battery, the electrolytes carry positively charged lithium ions between the anodes and the cathodes though the separator. When the battery is powering a device, the anode releases lithium ions to the cathode, creating a flow of electrons. In rechargeable batteries, this flow reverses when the battery charges. Then, the lithium ions are released by the cathode and received by the anode.

For example, they can properly size cranes and other electric motors, and efficiently manage peaks in energy demand for noise-sensitive events and for electric vehicles (EV) recharging stations. Operators can synchronize several models, which can become the heart of any microgrid, storing and delivering energy coming from several energy sources, including renewables.

 

In addition, when coupled with a power generator, energy storage systems account for low load, reducing the generator running hours by up to 70%. This translates into a longer generator lifetime, five to ten years.
